This thesis presents the results of an experimental and analytical study of single-port buoyant turbulent jets discharged into shallow water. The experimental results include the measured downstream dilution, centerline concentration and trajectory. Independent parameters considered were Froude number, submerged depth, discharge angle and velocity ratio. Results indicate that decreasing the discharge depth provides earlier occurrence of surface effect and greatly decreases dilution. Dilution increases with decreasing Froude number. Increasing the discharge angle from the horizontal into cross current increases the dilution ratio. The effect of ambient current on dilution depends on the angle of discharge. For cross-flow discharges, the dilution rate decreases with increasing ambient current, while for co-flow discharge the reverse trend was observed. As plumes reach the water surface, the dilution rate increases with increasing ambient velocity. The jets bend over rapidly for cross-flow discharges when large ambient currents are present. The analytical portion of this report presents an integral method proposed by Davis (1975) for merging multiple buoyant jets. This merging model was used to simulate the single-port buoyant jet in shallow water. This was done by using an image method where the submerged depth was simulated by the spacing between images. The entrainment function as presented by Kannberg and Davis (1978) was used except for a modification within the zone of merged plumes. Comparisons of the model prediction were made with experimental data. Results indicate that good predictions are obtained for buoyant jets discharging at 0 and 45 degrees into shallow water by using the image method as long as the Froude number is above 13.5. For lower Froude number and vertical discharges, model predictions are only fair.

(Uncorrected OCR) A bstract of thesis entitled "Mixing of a Non-Buoyant Multiple Jet Group in Crossflow" submitted by Md. Shahjahan Ali for the degree of Master of Philosophy at the University of Hong Kong in December, 2003 A submerged multiple jet group is an efficient environmental mixing device often used in waste water disposal systems and also found in natural environmental systems (e.g. bivalve currents on the sea bed) and anthropogenic activities. When a number of jets oriented in a line are discharged, the leading edge jets shelter the rear jets from the crossflow and produce a change in the mixing characteristics. This phenomenon has been reported in previous works, but no quantitative analysis has so far been made, and the three-dimensional jet interaction with the crossflow is still unresolved. In this study a comprehensive experimental investigation of the characteristics of a submerged multiple jet group (two to eight jets in a group) in crossflow has been performed under non-buoyant conditions, and the interaction of multiple jets with the crossflow is studied in the absence of strong boundary effect. A heuristic model is formulated to explain the interaction of jets in crossflow. Laser-Induced Fluorescence (LIF) and Acoustic Doppler Velocimetry (ADV) techniques are applied to study the concentration and velocity field respectively. The multiple jet interaction with the crossflow is explained through the experimental results of 2-, 3-, 4-, 6- and 8-jet groups, with a jet spacing of five jet diameters. To trace the individual flow path clearly, a series of experiments have been performed on multiple jets with individual jet isolation. The effect of jet spacing on mixing phenomena is investigated for a 2-jet group with a spacing ranging from 2 to 15 jet diameters. The crossflow momentum length scale of the experiments ranged from 1.6 to 15 jet diameters, which corresponds to a jet-to- ambient velocity ratio of 1.8 to 17.5. The effective crossflow velocit.

The interference phenomenon occurring when a subsonic turbulent jet exhausts normally from a large flat plate into a low speed crossflow was experimentally investigated in the Georgia Tech nine foot wind tunnel. Static pressures were measured on the surface around the jet. In the region off the surface, including the jet plume, wake and surrounding areas, the average total and static pressures and the average velocity magnitudes and directions were determined. Three jet exit configurations were studied, one circular and two slot-shaped with width to length ratios of 0.3 and 3.4. All have the same exit area. The effective jet to cross-flow velocity ratio was varied, for each of the exit configurations, over the range 4.0 to 12.0. Analysis of the data indicates that the pressure distributions induced on the surface are a combined result of the jet's blocking and entraining effects on the cross flow with entrainment becoming the more dominant of the two as the effective velocity ratio is increased. This relative dominance brings about an attenuation of total interference lift loss (when computed as a fraction of gross thrust) primarily by causing a rise in the low pressures in the wake region as the effective velocity ratio increases. When the effective velocity ratio is held fixed, the total interference lift loss increases with increasing width to length ratio of the jet exit. (Author).
