After a long period of relatively slow change and development, the practice of psychotherapy entered a phase of vigorous experimentation in the 1960s. Greatly increased public recognition of the role of psychological approaches has brought about a dramatic upsurge of demand for mental health services on the part of broader segments of the population than ever before. Many kinds of people now seek aid, and display a greater variety of symptoms and life problems than are recorded in the earlier case-history literature. The professional response to this new demand markedly increased the professions creativity and imagination, as this volume outlines. While it is difficult to devise a precise category to cover all forms of such experimentation in psychotherapy, one major characteristic has been an increase in activity. The non-directive or client-centered therapist frequently speaks almost as much as his client, yet he is not considered active, since he attempts to limit his communication to the reflection of the clients feelings.More frequently an attempt is made to distinguish between insight-oriented therapies and active therapies in terms of differing goals.Active psychotherapy is seen as being concerned with techniques that focus directly on the removal of symptoms, such as anxiety or maladaptive overt behavior. The need to establish a clear dichotomy between insight and behavior modification has often been challenged: many of the therapists who stress insight do so in the belief that increased insight, no matter how arrived at, will modify overt behavioral anxiety. Experimentation in Psychotherapy exposes the reader to a wide variety of therapies. Although changes in treatment methods, and a more short-term orientation, have limited some future developments in the field, this volume admirably describes the techniques traditional therapists can effectively employ, given the patient's strengths and limitations.

This book details the first comparative study under controlled conditions of the three major schools of psychotherapy-client-centered therapy, behavioral or systematic desensitization therapy, and rational-emotive therapy. The study was organized to compare the effectiveness of these distinct forms of counseling with two distinct personality types-introverts and extroverts-in the treatment of two specific homogeneous problems-interpersonal anxiety and general anxiety. The study was reviewed by experts representing each of the schools of thought, and critiques are included as part of the total book. Each school of therapy was evaluated to determine which was most effective with what type of subject. In this study, client-centered therapy proved to have the best results in reducing anxiety with extroverts, while the rational-emotive approach worked best with introverts. The therapy that had the greatest breadth, in terms of effectiveness for both kinds of clients, was systematic desensitization. This remarkable study should have far-reaching influence in the practical use of psychotherapy, and is essential reading for all professionals and psychology students who plan to enter the area of counseling. Instructors can use this book as a basic text or as a supplement to all introductory courses in clinical or counseling psychology offered at the senior/graduate level.

Although creativity is often considered an individual ability or activity, innovation in teams and organizations involves collaboration of people with diverse perspectives, knowledge, and skills. The effective development of collaborative innovations and solutions to problems is critical to the success of teams and organizations, but research has also demonstrated many factors which tend to limit the effectiveness of collaborative innovation of groups and teams. This volume highlights recent theoretical, empirical, and practical developments that provide a solid basis for the practice of collaborative innovation and future research. It draws from a broad range of research perspectives including cognition, social influence, groups, teams, creativity, communication, networks, information systems, organizational psychology, engineering, computer science, and the arts. This volume is an important source of information for students, scholars, practitioners, and others interested in understanding the complexity of the group creative process and tapping the creative potential of groups and teams.
