A pesar de sus limitaciones el libro -calificado de muy útil para la preparación/renovación de programas prácticos de Química General, Química Inorgánica y Química Organometálica- va más allá de la simple repetición de experimentos conocidos; presenta la síntesis detallada de una amplia gama de compuestos inorgánicos y organometálicos, utilizando el procedimiento más adecuado atendiendo a la minimización de residuos desde la perspectiva de la economía atómica y a la escala óptima en función del escenario, por lo que no debería de faltar en los laboratorios de Química.

Se describe la síntesis detallada de un gran número de compuestos inorgánicos. Las principales diferencias entre esta edición y la anterior pueden resumirse del modo que sigue. Se ha ampliado la selección de compuestos a preparar y de actividades a desarrollar con cada tipo de compuestos. Se ha indicado al final de cada síntesis la posibilidad de utilizar el producto como material de partida para la preparación de otros compuestos de interés, haciendo referencia de modo indirecto a la creciente importancia de la economía circular. Se facilita así la preparación de proyectos cíclicos de síntesis centrados en un metal, de modo que se elimine o minimice la producción de residuos. Sin embargo, en la descripción del modo operatorio, se ha mantenido la indicación de verter los residuos por el sumidero acompañados de abundante agua. Tal indicación, en tiempos en los que se camina inexorablemente hacia la minimización del consumo de agua, debe de ser interpretada en función de las características de cada laboratorio Se ha eliminado la referencia concreta al tiempo requerido en cada preparación y se ha colocado junto al título, entre paréntesis, un t = 1, 2, etc. para indicar el números de sesiones en que se puede llevar a cabo la síntesis. Se han incluido algunas referencias bibliográficas recientes para destacar la importancia actual de los compuestos a preparar. En el apartado de sugerencias se ha incluido la síntesis de compuestos no tanto porque se hallen descritas con criterios propios de la química verde como por su interés general. En estos casos vale la pena discutir posibles alternativas sintéticas de naturaleza más limpia que las descritas. Algunas de ellas son adecuadas para ser conducidas en 'modo investigación' introduciendo modificaciones tales como el empleo de otros productos de partida, la eliminación de algunos pasos que permitan la reducción significativa del tiempo de operación, la sustitución de los disolventes empleados por otros de menor toxicidad, incluso la simplificación de algunos equipos que faciliten la tarea. Los resultados pueden ser sorprendentes y constituir una fuerte motivación para los estudiantes al comprobar que pueden mejorar los procedimientos actualmente considerados como los mejor definidos o más adecuados. Se ha incluido un índice para facilitar la localización de los compuestos, particularmente de aquellos cuya síntesis no se halla descrita con detalle, así como de las sugerencias de otras actividades de interés.
