The text book of Microbiology as taught in different courses in various universities. It has been divided in five sections. The students of microbiology at present are required to consult a large number of books to grapple with the subject and, therefore, the form and details of this book have been given in order to give them basic understanding of the subject.Sections I deals with the history of microbiology, taxonomy, morphology and reproduction of micro-organisms, wherein, a brief account of eukaryotic microorganism is also discussed. Section II covers physiology wherein, a basic account of biochemistry and details of enzyme and metabolic processes in microorganisms is included. Further, certain techniques namely, ELISA and SDGC are also described. Section III deals with microbial genetics. Chapter 14 of this section starts with the basic terms used in genetics & description of nucleic acid. Besides microbial genetics transposable elements and transposition have been given. It also covers molecular biolo. Section IV deals with Applied Microbiology. Human and Plant Diseases have been covered. Detailed account of Immunology, Soil Microbiology, and Indus-trial Microbiology has been included. Geomicrobiology has been treated specially in a chapter separately devoted to it. Section V covers techniques wherein, various types of microscopy, instrumentation and cultural techniques are given. The students of microbiology at present are required to consult a large number of books to grapple with the subject and, therefore, the form and details of this book have been given in order to give them basic understanding of the subject.

This translation of the sixth edition of a widely used German textbook is a concise account of microbiology for all students of biological sciences, and includes information on bacteria, fungi and viruses. It covers many fields - cytology, microbial evolution, the comparative biochemistry of micro-organisms and the roles of microbes in ecosystems - and also gives a lucid account of many practical applications of microbes as producers of foods and therapeutic agents, and as decomposing organisms. The study of micro-organisms has contributed to our understanding of many basic problems of biology: the ease with which they may be manipulated and their capacity for adaptation, among other properties, have made them particularly useful. The book will therefore be valuable to students of microbiology, biochemistry and genetics.

Brief chapters on history and methods are followed by detailed treatment of structure, metabolism, growth, environmental factors and microbial genetics. An introductory section dealing with bacterial classifications prefaces 13 chapters concerned with characteristics of groups of micro-organisms.

Welcome to the wonderful world of microbiology! Yay! So. What is microbiology? If we break the word down it translates to "the study of small life," where the small life refers to microorganisms or microbes. But who are the microbes? And how small are they? Generally microbes can be divided in to two categories: the cellular microbes (or organisms) and the acellular microbes (or agents). In the cellular camp we have the bacteria, the archaea, the fungi, and the protists (a bit of a grab bag composed of algae, protozoa, slime molds, and water molds). Cellular microbes can be either unicellular, where one cell is the entire organism, or multicellular, where hundreds, thousands or even billions of cells can make up the entire organism. In the acellular camp we have the viruses and other infectious agents, such as prions and viroids. In this textbook the focus will be on the bacteria and archaea (traditionally known as the "prokaryotes,") and the viruses and other acellular agents.
