All students need to master a variety of mathematical tools and concepts at the start of their university career. This distinctive book helps students learn these by doing. The approach is interactive, using experiments, performed in the symbolic algebra package Mathematica, to impart the fundamentals of many of the topics students encounter. A clear exposition of the topic accompanies every experiment. The modular style of the book allows students to study each topic independently. The sheer power of computer algebra software lets students develop and test their own conjectures, obtaining quick and instructive results. The software modules accompanying this course includes many custom functions designed to facilitate learning and testing process.Students who have some familiarity with the material will find their understanding refreshed and deepened through this approach. The exposure to modern computer algebra software will also benefit students in their subsequent studies, research, and professional careers. This classroom-tested book covers Calculus; Complex Numbers; Vectors and Matrices; Functions and Graphs; Trigonometry; and Series. It should therefore also be of use to many secondary school and high school students.Requires: Mathematica 2.2 or later (to be purchased separately); notebook interface. Software modules for this book are available with the hardback edition and via the Internet, or directly from the authors. There is a gap between the extensive mathematics background that is beneficial to biologists and the minimal mathematics background biology students acquire in their courses. The result is an undergraduate education in biology with very little quantitative content. New mathematics courses must be devised with the needs of biology students in mind. In this volume, authors from a variety of institutions address some of the problems involved in reforming mathematics curricula for biology students. The problems are sorted into three themes: Models, Processes, and Directions. It is difficult for mathematicians to generate curriculum ideas for the training of biologists so a number of the curriculum models that have been introduced at various institutions comprise the Models section. Processes deals with taking that great course and making sure it is institutionalized in both the biology department (as a requirement) and in the mathematics department (as a course that will live on even if the creator of the course is no longer on the faculty). Directions looks to the future, with each paper laying out a case for pedagogical developments that the authors would like to see.

Research into the teaching and learning of mathematics in higher education is in its infancy as a recognised academic field, and little has been published to inform and assist those teaching the subject. However, interest is growing in teaching quality, in the training of teaching assistants, and in staff development. This book makes available a wide selection of material on mathematics teaching and learning — purpose, curriculum design, teaching methodology and specific material — produced at a series of working conferences. It will be useful to all teachers and tutors of mathematics in higher education.

With a specific focus on the mathematical life in small undergraduate colleges, this book presents a variety of elementary number theory insights involving sequences largely built from prime numbers and contingent number-theoretic functions. Chapters include new mathematical ideas and open problems, some of which are proved in the text. Vector valued MGPF sequences, extensions of Conway’s Subprime Fibonacci sequences, and linear complexity of bit streams derived from GPF sequences are among the topics covered in this book. This book is perfect for the pure-mathematics-minded educator in a small undergraduate college as well as graduate students and advanced undergraduate students looking for a significant high-impact learning experience in mathematics.

Computational Experiment Approach To Advanced Secondary Mathematics Curriculum written by Sergei Abramovich and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-05-08 with Education categories.

This book promotes the experimental mathematics approach in the context of secondary mathematics curriculum by exploring mathematical models depending on parameters that were typically considered advanced in the pre-digital education era. This approach, by drawing on the power of computers to perform numerical computations and graphical constructions, stimulates formal learning of mathematics through making sense of a computational experiment. It allows one (in the spirit of Freudenthal) to bridge serious mathematical content and contemporary teaching practice. In other words, the notion of teaching experiment can be extended to include a true mathematical experiment. When used appropriately, the approach creates conditions for collateral learning (in the spirit of Dewey) to occur including the development of skills important for engineering applications of mathematics. In the context of a mathematics teacher education program, the book addresses a call for the preparation of teachers capable of utilizing modern technology tools for the modeling-based teaching of mathematics with a focus on methods conducive to the improvement of the whole STEM education at the secondary level. By the same token, using the book’s pedagogy and its mathematical content in a pre-college classroom can assist teachers in introducing students to the ideas that develop the foundation of engineering profession.

Advances In Experimental Philosophy Of Logic And Mathematics written by Andrew Aberdein and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-05-02 with Philosophy categories.

This book explores the results of applying empirical methods to the philosophy of logic and mathematics. Much of the work that has earned experimental philosophy a prominent place in twenty-first century philosophy is concerned with ethics or epistemology. But, as this book shows, empirical methods are just as much at home in logic and the philosophy of mathematics. Chapters demonstrate and discuss the applicability of a wide range of empirical methods including experiments, surveys, interviews, and data-mining. Distinct themes emerge that reflect recent developments in the field, such as issues concerning the logic of conditionals and the role played by visual elements in some mathematical proofs. Featuring leading figures from experimental philosophy and the fields of philosophy of logic and mathematics, this collection reveals that empirical work in these disciplines has been quietly thriving for some time and stresses the importance of collaboration between philosophers and researchers in mathematics education and mathematical cognition.
