Experiments with Body Agent Architecture puts forward the notion of body agents: non-ideal, animate and highly specific figures integrated with design to enact particular notions of embodied subjectivity in architecture. Body agents present opportunities for architects to increase imaginative and empathic qualities in their designs, particularly amidst a posthuman condition. Beginning with narrative writing from the viewpoint of a body agent, an estranged ‘quattrocento spiritello’ who finds himself uncomfortably inhabiting a digital milieu (or, as the spiritello calls it, ‘Il Regno Digitale’), the book combines speculative historical fiction and original design experiments. It focuses on the process of creating the multi-media design experiments, moving from the design of the body itself as an original prosthetic to architectural proposals emanating from the body. A fragmented history of the figure in architecture is charted and woven into the designs, with chapters examining Michelangelo’s enigmatic figures in his drawings for the New Sacristy in the early sixteenth century, Gian Lorenzo Bernini’s physically ephemeral ‘putti’ adorning chapels and churches in the seventeenth century, and Austrian artist-architect Walter Pichler’s personal and prescient figures of the twentieth century.

Finishing in Architecture: Polishing, Completing, Ending explores the topic of finishing and the fascinating physical and metaphysical implications of its various conceptions in architecture. Finishing is essential to all human practices and concepts of time, yet simultaneously it is largely impossible to identify an entirely finished state of being. As mortals, we organize our worlds into beginnings and endings, starts and finishes. Architecture’s temporality, however, may contain something of both the mortal and immortal within it – a desire for permanence combined with lamentation over its impossibility. While many approaches to finishing construct two opposed ontological conditions (the finished and the unfinished), this dualistic ploy neglects the complexity of architectural practice, cultural reception, and historiographic shifts in semiotics during the lifetime of a building. More nuanced approaches are examined in this collection of 38 essays and creative works from a diverse group of scholars, architects, and artists who conceptualize finishing not simply as a final outcome, but as an extended action, a mood that presumes an end is near, all the while working continuously toward (but never achieving) completion. It is here that the concept of finishing is not a state of being but a state of becoming, as an active thickening of time when the end is thought to be imminent but not yet attained. Finishing, more than a final endpoint, is a void state that is extended through efforts framing its territory, while never quite containing it. From the material to the procedural and the conceptual, this volume explores the practices of finishing in architecture within three currents: surfaces, projects, and most broadly, architectural times. It will be of interest to students and instructors of architecture and design, architectural historians, and other scholars.

The Talking Heads Experiment written by Luc Steels and has been published by Language Science Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-05-11 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

The Talking Heads Experiment, conducted in the years 1999-2001, was the first large-scale experiment in which open populations of situated embodied agents created for the first time ever a new shared vocabulary by playing language games about real world scenes in front of them. The agents could teleport to different physical sites in the world through the Internet. Sites, in Antwerp, Brussels, Paris, Tokyo, London, Cambridge and several other locations were linked into the network. Humans could interact with the robotic agents either on site or remotely through the Internet and thus influence the evolving ontologies and languages of the artificial agents. The present book describes in detail the motivation, the cognitive mechanisms used by the agents, the various installations of the Talking Heads, the experimental results that were obtained, and the interaction with humans. It also provides a perspective on what happened in the field after these initial groundbreaking experiments. The book is invaluable reading for anyone interested in the history of agent-based models of language evolution and the future of Artificial Intelligence.

Resilience will be a defining quality of the twenty-first century. As we witness the increasingly turbulent effects of climate change, the multiple challenges of resource depletion and wage stagnation, we know that our current ways of living are not resilient. This volume takes resilience as a transformative concept to ask where and what architecture might contribute. Bringing together cross-disciplinary perspectives from architecture, urban design, art, geography, building science and psychoanalysis, it aims to open up multiple perspectives of research, spatial strategies and projects that are testing how we can build local resilience in preparation for major societal challenges, defining the position of architecture in urban resilience discourse. Mastering the sensorimotor capabilities of our body is a skill that we acquire and refine over time, starting at the prenatal stages of development. This learning process is linked to brain development and is shaped by the rich set of multimodal information experienced while exploring and interacting with the environment. Evidence coming from neuroscience suggests the brain forms and mantains body representations as the main strategy to this mastering. Although it is still not clear how this knowledge is represented in our brain, it is reasonable to think that such internal models of the body undergo a continuous process of adaptation. They need to match growing corporal dimensions during development, as well as temporary changes in the characteristics of the body, such as the transient morphological alterations produced by the usage of tools. In the robotics community there is an increasing interest in reproducing similar mechanisms in artificial agents, mainly motivated by the aim of producing autonomous adaptive systems that can deal with complexity and uncertainty in human environments. Although promising results have been achieved in the context of sensorimotor learning and autonomous generation of body representations, it is still not clear how such low-level representations can be scaled up to more complex motor skills and how they can enable the development of cognitive capabilities. Recent findings from behavioural and brain studies suggests that processes of mental simulations of action-perception loops are likely to be executed in our brain and are dependent on internal motor representations. The capability to simulate sensorimotor experience might represent a key mechanism behind the implementation of further cognitive skills, such as self-detection, self-other distinction and imitation. Empirical investigation on the functioning of similar processes in the brain and on their implementation in artificial agents is fragmented. This e-book comprises a collection of manuscripts published by Frontiers in Robotics and Artificial Intelligence, under the section Humanoid Robotics, on the research topic re-enactment of sensorimotor experience for cognition in artificial agents. This compendium aims at condensing the latest theoretical, review and experimental studies that address new paradigms for learning and integrating multimodal sensorimotor information in artificial agents, re-use of the sensorimotor experience for cognitive development and further construction of more complex strategies and behaviours using these concepts. The authors would like to thank M.A. Dylan Andrade for his art work for the cover.

This book contains selected and revised papers of the European Symposium on Adaptive and Learning Agents and Multi-Agent Systems (ALAMAS), editions 2005, 2006 and 2007, held in Paris, Brussels and Maastricht. The goal of the ALAMAS symposia, and this associated book, is to increase awareness and interest in adaptation and learning for single agents and mul- agent systems, and encourage collaboration between machine learning experts, softwareengineeringexperts, mathematicians, biologistsandphysicists, andgive a representative overviewof current state of a?airs in this area. It is an inclusive forum where researchers can present recent work and discuss their newest ideas for a ?rst time with their peers. Thesymposiaseriesfocusesonallaspectsofadaptiveandlearningagentsand multi-agent systems, with a particular emphasis on how to modify established learning techniques and/or create new learning paradigms to address the many challenges presented by complex real-world problems. These symposia were a great success and provided a forum for the pres- tation of new ideas and results bearing on the conception of adaptation and learning for single agents and multi-agent systems. Over these three editions we received 51 submissions, of which 17 were carefully selected, including one invited paper of this year’s invited speaker Simon Parsons. This is a very c- petitive acceptance rate of approximately 31%, which, together with two review cycles, has led to a high-quality LNAI volume. We hope that our readers will be inspired by the papers included in this volume.
