Explaining The Reagan Years In Central America written by Jeremy M. Brown and has been published by University Press of America this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1995 with History categories.

In his analysis of the relations between the United States and Central America through the 1980s, Brown seeks to broaden our view of events and historical processes by examining these relations in historical and global terms in lieu of the usual local or regional comparative focus. By drawing on the central concepts of Immanuel Wallerstein's World System Theory, the ideologically and strategically contorted policies of the Reagan years can be understood in the context of an evolving American society within the Modern World System. This critical historical narrative follows the growth of an American state and nation and its relations with Central America from its origins as a collection of colonies on the periphery of the world system, through eras of expansionism, imperialism, world wars, and triumph as global hegemon, and into ultimate crisis, decline, and conservative reaction through the 1980s. Primary emphasis is placed on the internal ideological and global strategic polarizations of the Cold War and their influence on American society, foreign relations with Central America, and the conservative extremes of the Reagan years.

Crossroads written by Cynthia Arnson and has been published by Pantheon this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1989 with History categories.

Arnson, a foreign policy consultant, has written an incisive study of the tug-of-war between President Reagan and Congress and how the circumvention of Congress's ban on military aid culminated in the Iran-contra scandal. At first, the Reagan administration depicted the contras as freedom fighters and the Sandinistas as ferrying arms to the rebels in El Salvador. When both proved false, Reagan adopted a popular anti-Communist stance, and the real aim of overthrowing the Sandinistas and reinstating Somoza's old guard became clear. It was the means, not the end, of ridding the area of undemocratic regimes, that separated Congress from the Oval Office. Central America was caught in the crossfire as blatant abuse of executive authority threatened the checks-and-balances system of the Constitution.

The Cold War S Last Battlefield written by Edward A. Lynch and has been published by Global Academic Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-12-01 with Political Science categories.

Central America was the final place where U.S. and Soviet proxy forces faced off against one another in armed conflict. In The Cold War's Last Battlefield, Edward A. Lynch blends his own first-hand experiences as a member of the Reagan Central America policy team with interviews of policy makers and exhaustive study of primary source materials, including once-secret government documents, in order to recount these largely forgotten events and how they fit within Reagan's broader foreign policy goals. Lynch's compelling narrative reveals a president who was willing to risk both influence and image to aggressively confront Soviet expansion in the region. He also demonstrates how the internal debates between competing sides of the Reagan administration were really an argument about the basic thrust of U.S. foreign policy, and that they anticipated, to a remarkable degree, policy discussions following the September 11, 2001 terror attacks.

Resisting Reagan written by Christian Smith and has been published by University of Chicago Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-07-15 with Social Science categories.

A comprehensive analysis of the U.S. Central America peace movement, Resisting Reagan explains why more than one hundred thousand U.S. citizens marched in the streets, illegally housed refugees, traveled to Central American war zones, committed civil disobedience, and hounded their political representatives to contest the Reagan administration's policy of sponsoring wars in Nicaragua and El Salvador. Focusing on the movement's three most important national campaigns—Witness for Peace, Sanctuary, and the Pledge of Resistance—this book demonstrates the centrality of morality as a political motivator, highlights the importance of political opportunities in movement outcomes, and examines the social structuring of insurgent consciousness. Based on extensive surveys, interviews, and research, Resisting Reagan makes significant contributions to our understanding of the formation of individual activist identities, of national movement dynamics, and of religious resources for political activism.

Since the 1960s, political violence and war in Nicaragua, El Salvador, and Guatemala have taken 300,000 lives, displaced millions, and reversed decades of economic gains. Progress toward peace has been made since 1989 as the decade of war has changed the politics of conflict in the region and in Washington. In this new edition of a widely praised book, two of the most respected writers on Central American politics examine the origins and development of the region's political conflicts and efforts to resolve them. Highlights of the new edition include an analysis of rapidly evolving regional peace processes, Nicaragua's 1990 elections, the exit of the Sandinistas from power, and the Salvadoran peace accord. The authors trace the roots of underdevelopment and crisis in the region by examining the shared and individual histories of the Central American nations. They offer a theory about rebellion and political stability to account for the striking contrast between war-torn Guatemala, El Salvador, and Nicaragua and the stability of Costa Rica and Honduras. Booth and Walker examine the forces driving popular mobilization—economic change, liberation theology, and Marxism—and evaluate the dramatic changes in U.S. policy toward Central America over the last decade as well as the implications of those changes for the future of the region.

The presidency of Ronald Reagan has become a Rorschach Test for politicians and citizens alike. While many conservatives see the Reagan era of the 1980s as the high-water mark for their movement and a time of national recovery from the difficulties of the 1970s, many liberals maintain that the rosy Reagan legacy is based largely on myth, and that in fact his eight years as president caused serious harm to the country. John Ehrman and Michael W. Flamm give due attention to the lasting controversies surrounding the Reagan record and provide a balanced view of the fortieth president's foreign and domestic policies. Students are encouraged to draw their own conclusions by reading key primary documents.
