In the English-speaking world, university Schools of Education are usually heavily involved in the professional preparation of teachers. Yet, in England and the USA in particular, the role of universities in teacher education has increasingly seemed under threat as alternative providers of training have come on the scene, often with the overt encouragement of governments. This book, which is based on a project that explored how the study of Education is configured in different countries, makes visible the different knowledge traditions that inform university teaching and research in Education around the world. The extent to which these are related to the training of teachers is shown to vary historically and comparatively. The book consists of a substantial introduction by the editors, which identifies 12 major knowledge traditions in the study of education, and classifies these as Academic Knowledge Traditions (such as Sciences de l’Éducation), Practical Knowledge Traditions (like that practised in Normal Colleges) and Integrated Knowledge Traditions (including the currently fashionable concept of Research-informed Clinical Practice). This introduction is followed by contributions on the nature of Education as a field of study in six countries – Australia, China, France, Germany, Latvia and the USA – authored by established experts from each of those jurisdictions. There are also chapters that provide useful conceptual frameworks for understanding the dimensions on which the various traditions in the study of Education differ, as well as those that compare the nature of Education along specific dimensions in different countries. The book concludes with a discussion, in the light of these contributions, of future prospects for the field of Education. The book will appeal to students, teachers and researchers in Education and is intended to encourage less parochial thinking about the nature of Education as a field of international study.

"Drawing on the work of Eleanor Duckworth, the authors examine "critical exploration in the classroom," a student-centered learning approach that Duckworth developed [herself drawing on the work of Jean Piaget). Per the authors, "such teaching and learning relies upon teachers' developed knowledge, skills, and wisdom in the practices of intentional listening, observing, and sensitive question-posing, and on their ability to conduct open and materials-based intellectual explorations with a diverse array of students." The complex work that the authors outline has grown less visible within programs of teacher education and in classrooms as other interests prevail-challenges like edTP A and standards-based instruction. The authors make a case for critical exploration within programs of teacher education, and demonstrate across chapters the ways in which such an approach may manifest itself within and across disciplinary domains"--

Do I want to become a teacher? What do I need to become the best teacher possible? What should a professional in the field of education know? If you have students asking themselves questions like these, Exploring Teaching: An Introduction to Teaching focuses them on getting the answers. This book takes students contemplating careers in teaching on a journey of exploration into the world and work of teaching, and into themselves as future teachers. It is the only text to make a sustained effort to help students decide whether teaching is the right career for them. There is much more of a focus than found in other texts on what teachers really do, on the realities of the classroom, and on the instructional demands teachers face. Part 1 provides an overview of teaching and teachers, while parts 2 through 5 profile the various contexts of teaching (classroom, school, sociopolitical, and professional) and examine the demands of each context. Each part ends with application and portfolio activities (self-assessment, observation, and interview) that help students evaluate themselves in terms of these roles and settings.

"Language Exploration and Awareness: A Resource Book for Teachers, Third Edition" shows English teachers how they can expand their curriculum beyond the traditional emphases on grammar and syntax, to help their students learn about many aspects of the English language, including general semantics, regional and social dialects, syntax, spelling, history of the English language, social language conventions, lexicography, and word origins. Clear, practical, and reader-friendly, the text reviews basic aspects of English language study in classrooms, then illustrates how teachers can create student-centered, inquiry-oriented activities for the learners in their classrooms. Written from a sociocultural perspective, this text stresses the uses of authentic language as it is used by real people for real purposes in diverse social contexts. Changes in the Third Edition are: all chapters have been thoroughly updated to address new developments in the world and in the field of English and language arts education; the chapters in Section II include new Student Explorations - activities designed by pre- and in-service teachers that readers can use with students in their classrooms; and new in this edition are references throughout several chapters to Web sites that instructors and students will find useful. This text is intended as text for undergraduate and master's level English language arts courses on the pedagogies of language teaching, and as an introduction to language or introduction to linguistics courses - particularly those emphasizing language study from a sociocultural perspective; and for courses preparing teachers of English as a new language. The text is also intended as a resource for current classroom teachers.

Drawing on the work of Eleanor Duckworth, this volume examines Critical Exploration in the Classroom (CEC)—a learning-teaching research practice that positions teachers as researchers of their students’ sense-making and learners as theorizers and investigators. By integrating CEC into their teacher education classrooms, chapter authors have found that they can reliably unsettle their teacher candidates’ understandings about the nature of teaching and learning and recenter their attention on the intellectual originality and creativity of all young people. In this way, CEC provides valuable tools in the work of creating more equitable and democratic classrooms. Such tools are needed in a broader environment that overvalues instrumental approaches to achieving specified learning outcomes. Readers will find practices that empower and sustain the deep intellectual engagement of all learners. Integrating classroom narratives and other forms of documentation, this resource illustrates the kinds of profound changes in understanding that have occurred for teacher candidates as a result of working with CEC. Book Features: Opens both the teacher educator and teacher candidates to new ways of teaching, learning, and being in classrooms.Demonstrates how the practice works to counter deficit thinking by revealing students’ brilliance.Uses narratives and other forms of documentation to characterize the potential of CEC within a diverse array of teacher education classrooms.Portrays the many ways in which CEC has been integrated into different disciplinary and institutional settings, illustrating the common intellectual and interpersonal dynamics at work.Chapter authors all studied Critical Exploration in the Classroom (CEC) with its originator, Eleanor Duckworth. Contributors: Elizabeth Cavicchi, Eleanor Duckworth, Fiona Hughes-McDonnell, Keri Gelenian, Houman Harouni, Yeh Hsueh, Susan Rauchwerk, Lisa Schneier, William Shorr, Bonnie Hao-Kuo Tai

This book helps language teachers to explore and become more aware of their own teaching beliefs, attitudes, and practices. It provides them with knowledge and guidelines that can empower them to make informed teaching decisions. Teacher educators will also find the text a practical book to use in preservice and inservice programs, courses, and workshops. The text discusses and illustrates activities teachers can use to gain awareness of teaching, including observation, action research, keeping journals, exploring with a supervisor, and connecting their personal and professional lives. It then gives examples of teachers who have used such activities to take a careful look at their own teaching practices. Tasks throughout the book give teachers experiential knowledge of the activities and ideas that characterize an exploratory approach to teaching awareness, which expands upon the usual training and development models of teacher education.
