The traditional models of the mind fall short when dealing with extraordinary people under ordinary conditions as well as with ordinary people under extraordinary conditions. This metapsychology is organized around the defensive operations of repression or splitting. In the model proposed here, defensive altered states of consciousness, or dissociation seems more helpful. A historical perspective is offered, from Freud and Breuer, with their Studies on Hysteria, to current thinking about dissociative disorders. A developmental line of dissociation is also explored.

This book is about how to develop an awareness of dissociation, as an individual and as a professional. It will be of significance and support for individuals who experience dissociation and their families and partners, for the professionals who support them, and for others who are interested in this previously "hidden epidemic". Dissociation is a psychological disconnection, a "blocking out", a "forgetting" and a "not knowing" in response to trauma, and can occur in both childhood and adulthood. This book specifically studies its occurrence as a coping mechanism in childhood in response to relational trauma. After the trauma has ended, the individual will automatically and out of conscious awareness dissociate again in their adulthood when triggered, and dissociation then continues. However, what worked in childhood for survival can become unhealthy or even unconsciously destructive in adulthood. The author offers an autobiographical look at her life, examining what she has learnt from being dissociative: including going through her own psychotherapy, becoming aware of her dissociation, and progressing to work with dissociative clients in an integrative psychotherapy setting. This is a 'bare bones' honest account and examines the healing relationship necessary to integrate and bring dissociation into conscious awareness leading to a healthier and more functional life. The author's 2008 Clinical Research for her MA in Integrative Psychotherapy on 'Dissociation and the Healing Relationship' and her subsequent Reflexive Research from 2015-2018 then follow, discovering common themes in individuals' experiences of dissociation and exploring the process of it coming into their conscious awareness through therapy. The book concludes with Jarrett's own therapeutic guidelines, "Three Steps towards Awareness of Dissociation", providing a proven framework for working sensitively, ethically and responsibly with dissociative clients to empower them towards their healing.
