Exploring Gregory of Nyssa: Philosophical, Theological, and Historical Studies brings together an interdisciplinary team of historians, classicists, philosophers, and theologians to offer a holistic exploration of the thought of Gregory of Nyssa. The volume considers Gregory's role in the main philosophical and religious controversies of his era, such as his ecclesiastical involvement in the Neo-Nicene apologetical movement. It looks at his complex relationships-for example with his brother Basil of Caesarea and with Gregory of Nazianzus. This volume explores Gregory Of Nyssa's concept of human nature. It argues that the frequent use Gregory makes of phusis-terminology is not only a terminological predilection, but rather the key to the philosophical and theological foundations of his thought. Starting from an overview of the theological landscape in the early 360's the study first demonstrates the meaning and relevance of universal human nature as an analogy for the Trinity in Cappadocian theology. The second part explores Gregory's use of this same notion in his teaching on the divine economy. It is argued that Gregory takes this philosophical theory into the service of his own theology. Ultimately the book provides an example for the mutual interaction of philosophy and Christian theology in the fourth century.

"It is generally agreed that virg. is Gregory of Nyssa's first written work, composed sometime in the early 370s. Recent scholarly interest in the text has tended to focus upon Gregory's alleged "ranking" of different forms of married and celibate life in relation to fourth century Christian asceticism. Rarely, however, has the overtly ascetical subject matter of the work been studied with regard to one of the most pressing doctrinal debates of the 370s and 380s, namely the dispute over the status of the Holy Spirit; a matter which the Cappadocian Fathers took up with great force against the Macedonians who denied the Spirit's essential unity with the Father and the Son. This chapter therefore investigates the role Gregory assigns to the Holy Spirit in the virgin's 'spiritual marriage' or union with Christ. I will show that Gregory stresses throughout the work that such union with Christ is in fact impossible for the naturally weak and fallen virgin unless it is actualised by the life-giving power of the Holy Spirit who shares in the very attributes of 'purity', 'incorruptibility' and 'virginity' that are proper to the Father and the Son. This he expounds with direct reference to baptismal theology. Thus, read in light of the debates with the Macedonians in the 370s and 380s, virg. can be understood to prescribe a form of ascetical life which rests upon the characteristically anti-Macedonian conviction that the Spirit, who is received at baptism, unites humanity to the Son and the Father because the Spirit is himself essentially united to the Son and the Father. This analysis of pneumatology in virg. is of central importance to my study of hom. in Cant: both works portray humanity's union with Christ under the metaphor of marriage. That Gregory construes this nuptial union in thoroughly pneumatological and hence baptismal terms in his earliest work serves to attune my focus upon resonant pneumatological and baptismal themes that shed light on his exegesis of the Song of Songs in his final written work"--

This collection of essays, by a team of Christian philosophers, theologians, and biblical scholars, explores the viability of a kenotic account of the incarnation. Such an account is inspired by Paul's lyrical claims in Philippians 2:6-11 that Christ Jesus, though God in nature, 'emptied himself' or 'made himself nothing' by becoming human. The biblical support for such a view can be found throughout the four gospels and the book of Hebrews, as well as in other places. A kenotic account takes seriously the possibility that Christ, in becoming incarnate, temporarily divested himself of such properties as omnipotence, omniscience, and omnipresence. Several of the contributors argue that this view is fully orthodox, and that it has great strengths in giving us a picture of a God who is willing to become completely vulnerable for the sake of human beings, and one that is completely consistent with the very human portrait of Jesus in the New Testament. The proponents of kenotic Christology argue that the philosophical accounts of God's nature that have led to rejection of this theory ought themselves to be subjected to criticism in light of the biblical data. Some essays test the theory by raising critical questions and arguing that traditional accounts of the incarnation can achieve the goals of kenotic theories as well as kenotic theories can. The book also explores the implications of a kenotic view of the incarnation for philosophical theology in general and the doctrine of the Trinity in particular, and it concludes with essays that examine the validity of the ideal of kenosis for women, and a challenge to traditional Christology to take a kenotic theory seriously.
