Changes in the present challenge us to reinterpret the past, but historians have not yet come to grips with the convergence of computing, media, and communications technology. Today these things are inextricably intertwined, in technologies such as the smartphone and internet, in convergent industries, and in social practices. Yet they remain three distinct historical subfields, tilled by different groups of scholars using different tools. We often call this conglomeration “the digital,” recognizing its deep connection to the technology of digital computing. Unfortunately, interdisciplinary studies of digital practices, digital methods, or digital humanities have rarely been informed by deep engagement with the history of computing.Contributors to this volume have come together to reexamine an apparently familiar era in the history of computing through new lenses, exploring early digital computing and engineering practice as digital phenomena rather than as enginesof mathematics and logic. Most focus on the period 1945 to 1960, the era in which the first electronic digital computers were created and the computer industry began to develop. Because digitality is first and foremost a way of reading objects and encoding information within them, we are foregrounding topics that have until now been viewed as peripheral in the history of computing: betting odds calculators, card file systems, program and data storage, programmable calculators, and digital circuit design practices. Reconceptualizing the “history of computing” as study of the “early digital” decenters the stored program computer, repositioning it as one of many digital technologies.

Increasing complexity of modern embedded systems demands system designers to ramp up their design productivity without compromising performance goals. This is promoted by modern Electronic System Level (ESL) techniques. Language-driven Exploration and Implementation of Partially Re-configurable ASIPs addresses an important segment of the ESL area by modeling partially re-configurable processors via high-level Architecture Description Language (ADL). This approach also hints an imminent evolution in the area of re-configurable system design.

Already today more than 90% of all programmable processors are employed in embedded systems. This number is actually not surprising, contemplating that in a typical home you might find one or two PCs equipped with high of embedded systems, performance standard processors, but probably dozens including electronic entertainment, household, and telecom devices, each of them equipped with one or more embedded processors. Moreover, the elec tronic components of upper-class cars incorporate easily over one hundred pro cessors. Hence, efficient embedded processor design is certainly an area worth looking at. The question arises why programmable processors are so popular in embed ded system design. The answer lies in the fact that they help to narrow the gap between chip capacity and designer productivity. Embedded processors cores are nothing but one step further towards improved design reuse, just along the lines of standard cells in logic synthesis and macrocells in RTL synthesis in earlier times of IC design. Additionally, programmable processors permit to migrate functionality from hardware to software, resulting in an even improved reuse factor as well as greatly increased flexibility.

The semiconductor market refers to the industry involved in the design, development, manufacturing, and distribution of semiconductors, which are the building blocks of electronic devices. Semiconductors are materials with electrical conductivity between that of conductors (such as metals) and insulators (such as plastics). They are primarily made of silicon, although other materials like gallium arsenide, germanium, and indium phosphide are also used. The semiconductor market has experienced significant growth over the years due to the increasing demand for electronic devices and advancements in technology. The market is driven by various factors such as the growing demand of smartphones and mobile devices, the expansion of the automotive industry, the rise of Internet of Things (IoT) devices, and the development of emerging technologies like artificial intelligence (AI), virtual reality (VR), and autonomous vehicles, etc. To sum up, the semiconductor market is a dynamic and rapidly evolving industry that plays a critical role in shaping the modern technological landscape. Its growth is driven by advancements in various sectors, and it continues to be a key enabler of innovation and technological progress. The range of individual technological elements necessary for the semiconductor industry is extensive, leading to the publication of numerous technical books across various domains. (while it is understandable that advanced technologies specific to each company are not publicly disclosed due to concerns regarding potential leaks) These publications have undeniably played a significant role in aiding professionals and students for establishing a solid foundation of knowledge. In addition to the importance of individual technologies, it is necessary to examine what final products emerge as these technologies converge. While consumer electronics such as PCs and smartphones vary, there are common aspects among the semiconductor products that constitute them. Should one seek more comprehensive materials, it often entails a costly purchase of white paper. In this book, we aim to delve into a more in-depth discussion of the semiconductor market, with an emphasis on the product perspective. To accomplish this, we will extensively draw upon various academic and market resources. Additionally, in order to foster a comprehensive understanding of the market, it is necessary to have a certain level of familiarity with technical elements. Therefore, some technical explanations alongside the discussions is provided. In this book, we primarily focus on the FAB (Fabrication) domain. This book is divided into three major parts. Part 1 provides an overview of the semiconductor market, covering the definition, significance, supply chain structure, regional characteristics, challenges, and more within the semiconductor industry. Part 2, the major portion of this book, offers a comprehensive explanation of the most widely used types of semiconductor products. Particularly high market share products, notably Microcomponents, APs, and memory semiconductors, will have separate in-depth descriptions provided in the appendix. Finally, Part 3 will outline the general process by which these products are designed, focusing on a typical perspective, up to the stage just before Foundry.

This book explores the essential facets of security threats arising from the globalized IC supply chain. Contemporary semiconductor companies navigate a globalized IC supply chain, exposing them to various threats such as Intellectual Property (IP) piracy, reverse engineering, overproduction, and malicious logic insertion. Several obfuscation techniques, including split manufacturing, design camouflaging, and Logic Locking (LL), have been proposed to counter these threats. This book describes a new security method for the silicon industry, the Tunable Design Obfuscation Technique, which uses a reconfigurability feature in the chip to make it harder to understand and protect it from rogue elements.
