Individuals with disabilities historically have been stigmatized in terms of their capabilities and social value. Despite equal opportunity and protections though modern U.S. legislation, negative perceptions and discrediting often is experienced. For example, during the course of obtaining higher education, students with invisible disabilities are frequently under scrutiny regarding their "need" for accommodations (Bento 2011; Connor, Gabel, Gallagher, & Morton 2008; Olney & Brockelman 2003), the genuineness of the impairment (Bento 2011; Schambler 2009), and if in fact those who have disabilities (especially learning disabilities) are capable of obtaining such education. Students must negotiate not only the structural systems and their oppressions, but they must negotiate themselves in relation to the varied and multiple identities other than disability that they possess (West & Zimmerman 1987). Each identity carries its own oppression, stigma and obstacles to the students' success, challenging them daily to embrace or deny their identities in order to successfully navigate their experience of higher education. Most policies, procedures, and accommodations in both public policy and education have been developed based on the outsider's viewpoint grounded upon normative, medicalized, and legal definitions of disability rather that the experiences of people with disabilities themselves (Ranseen & Parks 2005; Riddle & Weedon 2006), creating oppressive systems. Studying the experiences of students with disabilities can give direct and specific information to address my research question: This understanding can give direct and specific information as to what students experience in their educational journey and answer the question of, "What are the experiences of students with invisible disabilities in higher education?"

According to the data from the National Center for Education Statistics, the participation of students living with disabilities (SLWD) attending institutions of higher education has risen. This qualitative phenomenological study was designed to explore the experiences of inclusion of SLWD attending higher education. The purpose of this study was to learn from the experiences of six SLWD attending an institution of higher education (IHE) in Puerto Rico and the role of assistive technologies (AT) in this process. The theoretical framework that guided this study was drawn from the tenets of critical theory and disability studies. The data was collected during a period of six months through the development of semi-structured interviews. Portraits-in-progress were developed to bring to the forefront the participants' voices and how they describe their experiences of participating in IHE and using AT in the process. Each of these stories provides insight into how SLWD describe, confront, experience, resist, struggle, and above all negotiate with social oppressions that manifest in multiples ways throughout their participation in IHE. The analysis of the interviews was done following the interpretative phenomenological analysis guidelines which revealed complex issues that surface when exploring the process of inclusion of SLWD in IHE such as: access, assistive technology, barriers and being pro-active which are interrelated. Among the findings of this study was that while AT provides the opportunity to participate and interact in IHE, the process towards gaining access to AT is surrounded by many complexities. It was also found that AT was used by participants as a means towards resisting and reacting to their exclusion. Several findings throughout this study provide insights to the different barriers SLWD encounter while attending IHE; being society's reaction to disability the one identified by the participants to have its most adverse effect on their daily experiences.

Building on David M. Engel and Frank W. Munger’s work analyzing the narratives of people with physical and learning disabilities, this book examines the life stories of twelve physically disabled Canadian adults through the prism of the social model of disablement. Using a grounded theory approach and with extensive reporting of the thoughts of the participants in their own words, the book uses narratives to explore whether an advocacy identity helps or hinders dealings with systemic barriers for disabled people in education, employment, and transportation. The book underscores how both physical and attitudinal barriers by educators, employers and service providers complicate the lives of disabled people. The book places a particular focus on the importance of political economy and the changes to the labour market for understanding the marginalization and oppression of people with disabilities. Rather than embracing difference as a reflection of wider society, academic ecosystems seek to normalise and homogenise ways of working and of being a researcher. As a consequence, ableism in academia is endemic. However, to date no attempt has been made to theorise experiences of ableism in academia. Ableism in Academia provides an interdisciplinary outlook on ableism that is currently missing. Through reporting research data and exploring personal experiences, the contributors theorise and conceptualise what it means to be/work outside the stereotypical norm. The volume brings together a range of perspectives, including feminism, post-structuralism, such as Derridean and Foucauldian theory, crip theory and disability theory, and draw on the width and breadth of a number of related disciplines. Contributors use technicism, leadership, social justice theories and theories of embodiment to raise awareness and increase understanding of the marginalised; that is those academics who are not perfect. These theories are placed in the context of neoliberal academia, which is distant from the privileged and romanticised versions that exist in the public and internalised imaginations of academics, and used to interrogate aspects of identity, aspects of how disability is performed, and to argue that ableism is not just a disability issue. This timely collection of chapters will be of interest to researchers in Disability Studies, Higher Education Studies and Sociology, and to those researching the relationship between theory and personal experience across the Social Sciences.

This qualitative study explores the experiences of mothers who have children with developmental disabilities. I sought to understand both the positive aspects of mothering a child with a disability, as well as understand the potential negative aspects of mothering a child with a developmental disability. I also explored how the mothers reflected on this experience of mothering a child with a disability. Furthermore, I sought information on what services and/or supports these mothers found helpful, and why. Six mothers were interviewed for this study. From these interviews, six themes were identified: 1. positive experiences and emotions; 2. mothering a child with a developmental disability as difficult, stressful, and overwhelming work; 3). mothers' fears for their children; 4). mothers' sense of loss; 5). mothers' relationships with their non-disabled children; and 6). mothers' perceptions of the helpfulness of formal and informal supports.
