Designed for freshman/sophomore level planetary geology and solar system courses in geology departments and solar system courses in astronomy departments. Fully revised and updated, Exploring the Planets presents a thorough, systematic examination of planets, moons, asteroids and comets in our solar system. Treating each body in-depth and with great detail, it begins with discussion of small bodies and moves towards larger bodies as it emphasizes the roles of heat and tectonics in planetary evolution. The outer planets are discussed in order outward from the sun to emphasize the role distance from the sun plays in determining composition. Soundly organized around important themes, this text provides a theoretically based examination that facilitates comparative study of bodies and is accessible to non- specialists.

Exploring the Solar System chronicles more than three decades of planetary exploration, revealing the solar system in all its colourful glory. At one time, the planets and moons of our solar system were elusive and distant worlds that shimmered tantalizingly through telescope eyepieces; today they are landscapes as vivid and real as those of our own planet. Robotic explorers on missions deep into space and new techniques of image processing have provided us with remarkably realistic views of planetary surfaces and have led to the visual bounty seen in this book. More than 300 of the finest pictures from the missions of NASA - including the latest discoveries from the Hubble Space Telescope - and the space agencies of Europe, Russia and Japan show us the planets, moons, comets, and asteroids, and the mighty Sun itself.

"To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the first successful planetary mission, Mariner 2 sent to Venus in 1962, the NASA History Program Office, the Division of Space History at the National Air and Space Museum, NASA's Science Mission Directorate, and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory organized a symposium. "Solar System Exploration @ 50" was held in Washington, D.C., on 25-26 October 2012. The purpose of this symposium was to consider, over the more than 50-year history of the Space Age, what we have learned about the other bodies of the solar system and the processes by which we have learned it. Symposium organizers asked authors to address broad topics relating to the history of solar system exploration such as various flight projects, the development of space science disciplines, the relationship between robotic exploration and human spaceflight, the development of instruments and methodologies for scientific exploration, as well as the development of theories about planetary science, solar system origins and implications for other worlds. The papers in this volume provide a richly textured picture of important developments - and some colorful characters - in a half century of solar system exploration. A comprehensive history of the first 50 years of solar system exploration would fill many volumes. What readers will find in this volume is a collection of interesting stories about money, politics, human resources, commitment, competition and cooperation, and the "faster, better, cheaper" era of solar system exploration"--

Exoplanets explored until April,2023 5332 Confirmed 9432 NASA candidates 3999 Planetary systems As humans, we have always been fascinated by the unknown, the unexplored, and the unfamiliar. This curiosity has led us to explore the vast expanse of space and the wonders it holds. Among the countless mysteries of the cosmos, one of the most intriguing and captivating is the existence of exoplanets - planets beyond our solar system. The discovery of exoplanets has opened up a whole new realm of possibilities and raised many questions about the universe we live in. In just a few decades, our understanding of exoplanets has rapidly expanded, from the first discovery of a planet orbiting a pulsar in 1992 to the thousands of exoplanets discovered to date. In this book, we delve into the fascinating world of exoplanets, exploring the different types of exoplanets, their properties, and their potential for habitability. We will journey through the vast expanse of the universe to explore some of the most interesting and unusual exoplanets discovered so far. From planets with three suns to those that rain glass, each exoplanet has a unique story waiting to be uncovered. As we explore the wonders of these distant worlds, we will also delve into the methods and techniques used to discover exoplanets, the challenges facing exoplanet research, and the future of exoplanet studies. With each new discovery, our understanding of the universe grows, and the mysteries of the cosmos become a little less mysterious. This book is intended for anyone who is fascinated by the universe and the mysteries it holds, from amateur astronomers to professional scientists. It is my hope that this book will inspire a sense of wonder and curiosity about the universe and encourage readers to continue exploring the mysteries of exoplanets and beyond.

How were the features on the Moon created?. What is the evidence for past or future life on Mars? What might cause the Earth to become as hot and steamy as Venus? . Why do some say that a colliding asteroid wiped out the dinosaurs 65 million years ago? From the earliest of times the human race has pondered upon the nature of the Heavens. The moons and planets have changed from mere points of light to fascinating, diverse worlds. Spacecraft have visited all the planets known to ancient people. Human beings have visited the Moon, and robot spacecraft have landed on Venus and Mars. This book presents the result of this captivating voyage of discovery, recording more than two decades of extraordinary accomplishments. The voyage starts with the still, silent and lifeless Moon. Then on to the contrasting world of Mars with its towering volcanoes and deep canyons. The exploration continues across asteroid belts and icy comets to the outer planets where Voyager II revealed cyclonic storms, liquid hydrogen and helium rain and the beautiful pink and blue dynamic world of Neptune. This book includes numerous photos from spacecraft as well as a few works of modern art. They provide the best available metaphors and images of the previously invisible worlds.
