""How Lasers Work"" explores the physics behind lasers, illuminating their transformative applications across technology and medicine. It begins by establishing a foundation in light and electromagnetic radiation, progressing to explain light absorption, spontaneous emission, and stimulated emission – the key to laser function. The book emphasizes the laser's unique properties, such as monochromaticity and coherence, which enable its precision applications, like cutting through steel and repairing retinas. The book details the historical development of the laser, from Einstein's theoretical concepts to Theodore Maiman's first working laser in 1960. Different types of lasers, including gas, solid-state, and semiconductor lasers, are examined in terms of construction, principles, and specific uses. A significant portion is dedicated to laser applications in medicine, communication, and industry, providing real-world examples of their impact. The book uses experimental data and schematics, and connects laser physics to materials science, computer science, and environmental science. It provides a balanced treatment of theory and practice, making it valuable for both academic study and practical reference.

Over the last twenty years, automation and robotics have played an increasingly important role in a variety of application domains including manufacturing, hazardous environments, defense, and service industries. Space is a unique environment where power, communications, atmospheric, gravitational, and sensing conditions impose harsh constraints on the ability of both man and machines to function productively. In this environment, intelligent automation and robotics are essential complements to the capabilities of humans. In the development of the United States Space Program, robotic manipulation systems have increased in importance as the complexity of space missions has grown. Future missions will require the construction, maintenance, and repair of large structures, such as the space station. This volume presents the effords of several groups that are working on robotic solutions to this problem. Much of the work in this book is related to assembly in space, and especially in-orbit assembly of large truss structures. Many of these so-called truss structures will be assembled in orbit. It is expected that robot manipulators will be used exclusively, or at least provide partial assistance to humans. Intelligent Robotic Systems for Space Exploration provides detailed algorithms and analysis for assembly of truss structure in space. It reports on actual implementations to date done at NASA's Langley Research Center. The Johnson Space Center, and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Other implementations and research done at Rensselaer are also reported. Analysis of robot control problems that are unique to a zero-gravity environment are presented.

An inspirational biography of the Nobel Prize–winning inventor of the laser "Do exploration. Do things that are new and different." This is the philosophy that Charles H. Townes has lived by since he was a young boy growing up on a small farm in Greenville, South Carolina. While tending to chores, exploring the outdoors, and tinkering with broken tools and equipment, Townes began what became a lifelong love of exploring and inventing. His passion for new things drove him to an amazing career of discoveries that have changed the world. All of us have been affected by Townes's work, especially his most famous contribution to science: the laser. We're surrounded by lasers, and we may not even realize it: they are in computers, DVD players, atomic clocks, and barcode scanners at the grocery store checkout counter. Doctors, police, astronomers, and even Hollywood filmmakers use lasers regularly in their work. This extraordinary technology was made possible by Townes's hard work and dedication to the "new and different," winning him the Nobel Prize in physics in 1964. In First, You Explore, the first biography of Townes, Rachel Haynie chronicles the scientist's boyhood fascination with the physical world and his early reading, experiments, and exploration of his surroundings on his family's farm. Now at age ninety-eight, Townes is still actively involved in science and education, serving as a guiding force for the planetarium and observatory at the South Carolina State Museum. This inspirational biography includes a timeline of Charles Townes's major life events and additional biographical information that parents and educators will find useful as teaching tools.

A NASA science educator showcases important objects in space history from Galileo’s telescope to the Curiosity rover: “Will fascinate readers of any age.” —Publishers Weekly (starred review) This book examines 100 objects that forever altered what we know and how we think about the cosmos. From an ancient Mayan codex to Sputnik to Skylab and into the twenty-first century, some objects are iconic and some obscure—but all are utterly important. The Nebra sky disk (1600 BCE) features the first realistic depiction of the sun, moon, and stars. The Lunar Laser Ranging RetroReflector finally showed us how far we are from the moon in 1969. In 1986, it was the humble, rubber O-ring that doomed the space shuttle Challenger. The Event Horizon Telescope gave us our first glimpse of a black hole in 2019. These 100 objects showcase the workhorse tools and game-changing technologies that have altered the course of space history—and the small steps and giant leaps we’ve made in our quest to explore the farthest reaches of the universe. “Addictive . . . This diverse assortment of STEM milestones provides science, technology, and space enthusiasts plenty to ponder—and even debate.” —Booklist
