The theme in our studies in Hebrews is, the super-abounding excellence of Christianity over Judaism. The sum and substance, the center and circumference, the light and life of Christianity, is Christ. Therefore, the method followed by the Holy Spirit in this Epistle, in developing its dominant theme, is to show the immeasurable superiority of Christ over all that had gone before. One by one the various objects in which the Jews boasted are taken up, and in the presence of the superlative glory of the Son of God they pale into utter insignificance. We are shown First, His superiority over the prophets, Hebrews 1:1-3. Second, His superiority over angels in Hebrews 1:4 to Hebrews 2:18. Third, His superiority over Moses in Hebrews 3:1-19. Fourth, His superiority over Joshua, Hebrews 4:1-13. Fifth, His superiority over Aaron in Hebrews 5:14 to 7:18.

Arthur W. Pink was an exacting person. He was blessed (some say plagued) with a photographic memory. He never forgot what he had read, and upon occasion would prove it by stating the volume and page where he read a certain comment. Because of this, some found him hard to bear, since, if he were challenged, he could quote Scriptures by the hundreds to back up a statement of his. He plainly felt it was better to be right, than to be socially acceptable. Many a roast in the oven was burned to a crisp because Pink would preach 2 hours on a Sunday morning (from 11 a.m to 1 p.m). This is the commentary to own, if you cannot afford Owen. Why? Because Pink was an excellent judge of quality commenting, and he quotes extensively from Owen, Brown, Saphir, Gouge, etc. Along with the excellencies of these expositors, you get Pink's own valuable interpretations. You will find many unique comments in all of Pink's works. Yet he is such a close reasoner, and so adept at marshalling Scripture, that it is difficult to say, 'This time, Mr. Pink, you are wrong.' You will never regret the purchase of this set (3 vols. in 2).

The apostle's design. 2. The subject stated. 3. (I.) The law and gospel both agree in having God for their author. 4 - 6. (II.) The difference as to their revelation consists 1. In the times of their promulgation. 7 - 9 2. The manner of it. 10, 11. 3. Persons employed. 12. (III.) Jewish prejudices against the gospel obviated, by attending to 13. 1. The just statement of God's revealing his will by his Son. 14. 2. Several excellencies attending the revelation itself. 15. 3. The concessions of the Jews. 16. 4.
