Extending working lives has been a key item on the political agenda in Denmark for at least two decades now. This study details recent and prospective reforms to the voluntary early retirement scheme and the pension age, as well as current policy initiatives to keep older workers in employment. Other aspects central to a long working life, such as health, lifelong learning, age management practices in companies, and elderly workers' motivation are discussed in depth. Overall, Denmark is in a relatively good state when it comes to older workers' labour market participation and related job satisfaction. This impacts positively on the public finance challenge linked to population ageing which, given agreed reforms, should be manageable. Ongoing reform implementation is likely to substantially increase the employment of those aged 60 and over. Nevertheless, surveys point to age discrimination as a potential problem and people who fall into unemployment at a late stage of their careers still face challenges to reemployment.

The first edition of this book, published in 2018, analysed developments in systems of collective bargaining in fifteen mainly European Union countries related to the post-2008 crisis, mixing comparative and national presentations. Since then, other crises of unprecedented magnitude have hit all countries: the totally unexpected COVID-19 pandemic with its massive consequences, the energy crisis, the environmental crisis, and the Ukrainian war crisis followed by inflation. However, an essential change has taken place at the European level in this area since the publication in 2018 of the first edition, a change of such magnitude that it can be described as a paradigm shift. The adoption of the Directive on Adequate Minimum Wages marks a true break with the post-financial crisis period, as the EU is now focusing on the development and enhancement of strong sectoral collective bargaining systems in wage settings. This very new European context justifies an update of the research published in 2018 to analyse the evolutions of collective bargaining in this new context. The book is organised around two building blocks: Part I presents some comparative perspectives both in terms of the structure of the industrial relations systems and in terms of subjects of collective bargaining, whether this be a classical theme of collective bargaining (wages and working time) or less traditional themes (platform work, young people and older people which are two categories particularly affected by the crisis). Part II presents some national situations. Each chapter explores how national systems have been able to respond to European injunctions and have also responded to the new challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic and the emergence of new themes. These presentations demonstrate once again the extreme diversity of each industrial relations system. Some systems, such as the Austrian system, appear to be unfailingly stable, while the Belgian system seems to be having more difficulty adapting. Others, like the Portuguese or the Spanish systems, appear to be resilient, while in some countries, Turkey, Hungary, Poland and Romania, collective bargaining is particularly weak. In these countries, the question raised by the adoption of the AMW Directive is therefore to determine how sectoral bargaining can be developed in countries where there is no such level of bargaining or in countries where collective bargaining remains underdeveloped at all levels. As the first edition, the book takes stock of the current state of collective bargaining in Europe. It is an essential study for labour and employment law practitioners and an exemplary analysis of immeasurable value to policymakers and academics in the field.

Most European countries have experienced labour market reforms at varying times leading to extended working life and a postponement of retirement age. The project shows that the working environment is rarely the sole cause of early retirement, but working environment factors may explain a large fraction of the transition to disability pension in particular. Several working environment predictors of early retirement are well-documented in the Nordic countries, but workplace policies and activities to retain older workers rarely aim to improve the working environment. There may be great potentials in developing workplace interventions which combine prevention of working environment risk factors (e.g. risk factors for accidents, strenuous work/high physical work demands, insufficient recovery between work shifts, quantitative work demands, conflicts at work and bullying/harassment, and age discrimination) with increment of job satisfaction through increased control/influence, possibilities for development and recognition from management.

The seventh stage of an ongoing research project studying the relationship between social security programs and labor force participation, Social Security Programs and Retirement around the World: The Capacity to Work at Older Ages explores people’s capacity to work beyond the current retirement age. It brings together an international team of scholars from twelve countries—Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and the United States—to analyze this issue. Contributors find that many—but not all—individuals have substantial capacity to work at older ages. However, they also consider how policymakers might divide gains in life expectancy between years of work and retirement, as well as the main impediments to longer work life. They consider factors that influence the demand for older workers, as well as the evolution of health and disability status, which may affect labor supply from the older population.
