The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat has produced four Technical Guides to date, since the series launched in late 2012. Each of these guides is the product of a CTBUH Working Group—committees formed specifically to address focused topical subjects in the industry. The intention of each guide is the same—to provide working knowledge to the typical building owner or professional who wants a better understanding of available options for improving tall buildings, and what affects their design. The object of the series is to provide a tool-kit for the creation of better-performing tall buildings, and to spread the understanding of the considerations that need to be made in designing tall. This technical guide offers an extensive overview of the use of vertical vegetation in high-rise buildings, an indepth analysis of green walls, definitions and typology, including standards, policies and incentives. It features comprehensive case studies, along with architectural theories of the public and private benefits of green walls. The book delves into architect-design considerations and limitations, the effects of green walls on energy efficiencies and includes recommendations and future research.

Sustainable architecture is one of the most popular trends today. With dense urban living and less green space available, green walls and roofs are helping to fill that gap. These living structures can be created with vegetation, which helps to absorb rainwater, provide insulation and lower temperatures while creating a habitat for natural flora and fauna. Green Walls Green Roofs features projects from all over the world, showing how these elements work in various climates. Ranging from the tropical houses in Singapore to inner-city buildings in North America, this beautifully illustrated book will show you how living architecture can enrich our world. Gina Tsarounas has coordinated and authored a number of travel guides for Lonely Planet before joining Images Publishing as a senior editor. Her wealth of experience is demonstrated in the beautifully designed books now being produced. The integration of nature in architecture is a key concern of sustainability. However, all too often sustainable design is reduced to improving the energetic performance of buildings and the ornamental application of natural green. Dense + Green explores new architectural typologies that emerge from the integration of green components such as sky terraces, vertical parks and green facades, in high-density buildings. The book describes green strategies in a comparison across different design tasks and climate conditions. In-depth case studies on the most relevant building types, consistently presented with analytical drawings made exclusively for this book, are complemented by expert essays that demonstrate the current paradigm shift in the sustainable urban environment. From the Contents: •Dense + Green Building Types, by Thomas Schröpfer, architect, Singapore University of Technology and Design •Dense + Green Building Technology, by Atelier Ten, environmental design consultants and building services engineers, New York, NY •Dense + Green Landscape Design, by Herbert Dreiseitl, landscape architect, Atelier Dreiseitl/Rambøll Liveable Cities Lab, Überlingen/Singapore/Portland, OR •Dense + Green Botanical Design, by Jean Yong, plant eco-physiologist, Singapore University of Technology and Design •Dense + Green Urbanism, by Kees Christiaanse, urban planner, ETH Zurich •25 in-depth case studies from Europe, Asia and the USA •Practice Reports by Foster + Partners, WOHA, Ken Yeang, MVRDV and others

Or you may have gone to a place to see some old buildings and their harsh, bleak and stony exterior may have been softened with lots of ivy. This book is going to tell you all about vertical gardening, where you are going to be using a wall as a support. A green wall is always going to need a way in which you can water the plants so that you have living green walls. These vertical gardens are going to be the focus of everybody’s envy. The next time they come visiting your home, just point them out to that green growth covering the sides of your stone or brick pride and joy. So what is the difference between a green wall and a green façade? A green façade is going to be many plants planted at the base of the wall, and covering the wall up with the help of a trellis or any other sort of support, like ropes. The plants are going to be rooted in this soil, which may be on the ground, or maybe in containers. Metal and wire supports, especially for climbing plants can provide creepers with a firm hold. But a complete green wall is going to have a number of necessary growing mediums like soil, which are placed on the wall’s face. So you can have these containers either hanging at intervals off the green wall, or have your plants growing from niches and cracks in the wall, – this is how plants grow naturally in the wilderness, especially when they are looking for any sort of space from which to grow, especially on stone walls. You can have a green wall inside your house or outside it, depending on the weather. You can either attach it to a solid wall, or you can have it, freestanding all alone on its own. In ancient times, it is said that one of the seven greater ancient wonders of the World, the Hanging Gardens of Nineveh – absolutely not Babylon, such a site never existed at all – were made of a number of plants hanging down walls in different stages on a pyramid like ziggurat structure. As this was totally plain and desert area, one would wonder where the water came from to water all those plants? According to historians, water systems brought water down from the mountains and channels were cut into rows, so the water could go straight into the plant beds. I would not be surprised if a number of these plants were grown in water, as in modern-day hydroponics. Because what goes around comes around, and I am certain that the gardeners would have looked at other mediums in which they could plant plants, apart from soil. We are so used to seeing flowerbeds, spreading all over the land, horizontally, that we have not bothered much about vertical gardening. That is because instinctively our minds are set to just one way of gardening, since childhood. Make a hole in the ground, place the plant in it, stamp the soil down until the plant is firm, moisturize the soil, and then keep caring for your plant until you get an excellent harvest.

Urban planners across the world are faced with sustainable development issues in their work, especially when they are tasked with creating green cities or where sustainable and smart growth in urban settings are set as primary goals. This book introduces green city planning and practices from the three dimensions of green-building innovation, community development and smart city strategies, and argues that effective implementation of green city planning are a necessary pre-condition for reaching sustainable urban development. A range of authors representing a broad disciplinary spectrum bring together the different standards of green building methods and urban design techniques and clearly sketch the roles of both spatial designers and urban researchers in the implementation of green city planning at regional, community and single-building level in order to arrive at an integrated approach across different scales.
