This book, now in a revised and extended third edition, provides a comprehensive and accessible introduction to modern axiomatic set theory. After an overview of basic notions in combinatorics and first-order logic, and discussing in great detail the axioms of set theory, the author outlines in the second part the main topics of classical set theory, including Ramsey theory and the axiom of choice. As an application of the axiom of choice, a complete proof of Robinson's construction for doubling a ball by dividing it into only five parts is given. For the new edition, the chapter on permutation models has been extended, and recent results in set theory without the axiom of choice and about cardinal characteristics have been added. The third part explains the sophisticated technique of forcing from scratch, now including more details about iterated forcing. The technique is then used to show that certain statements are neither provable nor disprovable from the axioms of set theory. In particular, it is shown that both Martin's Axiom and Suslin's Hypothesis are independent of the axioms of set theory. The final part, with a new chapter on Laver forcing, is mainly concerned with consistency results obtained by iterations of forcing notions such as Cohen forcing, Sacks forcing, and Mathias forcing. The part begins with an extended chapter on countable support iterations of proper forcing notions, now also including proofs of some preservation theorems such as preservation of properness and of certain ultrafilters. In the following chapters, various consistency results concerning possible relations between cardinal characteristics and the existence of Ramsey ultrafilters are presented. For example, a detailed proof of Shelah’s astonishing construction of a model with finitely many Ramsey ultrafilters is given. Written for graduate students in axiomatic set theory, Combinatorial Set Theory will appeal to all researchers interested in the foundations of mathematics. With extensive reference lists, historical remarks, and related results at the end of the chapters, this book is also suitable for self-study.

The aim of this book is to develop a new approach which we called the hyper geometric one to the theory of various integral transforms, convolutions, and their applications to solutions of integro-differential equations, operational calculus, and evaluation of integrals. We hope that this simple approach, which will be explained below, allows students, post graduates in mathematics, physicists and technicians, and serious mathematicians and researchers to find in this book new interesting results in the theory of integral transforms, special functions, and convolutions. The idea of this approach can be found in various papers of many authors, but systematic discussion and development is realized in this book for the first time. Let us explain briefly the basic points of this approach. As it is known, in the theory of special functions and its applications, the hypergeometric functions play the main role. Besides known elementary functions, this class includes the Gauss's, Bessel's, Kummer's, functions et c. In general case, the hypergeometric functions are defined as a linear combinations of the Mellin-Barnes integrals. These ques tions are extensively discussed in Chapter 1. Moreover, the Mellin-Barnes type integrals can be understood as an inversion Mellin transform from the quotient of products of Euler's gamma-functions. Thus we are led to the general construc tions like the Meijer's G-function and the Fox's H-function.

This monograph contains a detailed exposition of the up-to-date theory of separably injective spaces: new and old results are put into perspective with concrete examples (such as l∞/c0 and C(K) spaces, where K is a finite height compact space or an F-space, ultrapowers of L∞ spaces and spaces of universal disposition). It is no exaggeration to say that the theory of separably injective Banach spaces is strikingly different from that of injective spaces. For instance, separably injective Banach spaces are not necessarily isometric to, or complemented subspaces of, spaces of continuous functions on a compact space. Moreover, in contrast to the scarcity of examples and general results concerning injective spaces, we know of many different types of separably injective spaces and there is a rich theory around them.
