Every year universities and colleges provide millions of students with not only educational experiences but also social experiences. Students’ involvement on campus influences their identification with other students, student groups, and even the university. Understanding the relationship between extracurricular involvement and a student’s sense of belonging is essential for higher education professionals. This research looked at the college student experience through the lens of student involvement theory, relationship motivation theory, and social identity theory. The study examined the level of extracurricular involvement a student has and the relationship to both social identity and organizational identity. Social identity theory and organizational identity theory are defined similarly to belonging in much of the literature. Essentially, they are defined as a multidirectional feeling that members are valued, cared for, and known on the campus through experiences. Extracurricular involvement was defined as actively participating in an on-campus club, organization, or specialty group. Results from the analysis show that this is a correlation and significant relationship between involvement and social identity as well as organizational identity. Through survey method, Pearson correlation tests, and two-way ANOVA, relationships between extracurricular involvement, social identity, and organizational identity were found. This study added to the understanding of student extracurricular involvement, social and organizational identity, and the role of relationships.

My dissertation consists of two studies investigating extracurricular activities as a context for social identity development. These studies relied on a sample drawn from 11 multiethnic middle schools as part of a larger project investigating the role of school ethnic diversity in socio-emotional adjustment. Study 1 examined the correlates of extracurricular participation and identification among seventh grade youth (N = 2,376). African-American and Latino/Mexican-American adolescents were less likely to both participate in and to identify with their activities, compared to their Asian-American and White/Caucasian peers. In turn, hierarchical linear modeling suggested that activity participation was linked with feelings of belonging at school and academic engagement (measured using self-reports and teacher ratings) for youth of all ethnic backgrounds. Moreover, activity-based social identities were associated with lower social anxiety for all youth and with school belonging for those in team-oriented activities. These findings suggest that it is important to get ethnic minority middle school students involved in and identifying with extracurricular activities that are linked with positive adjustment. Activities that are structured to be team-oriented may be particularly helpful to promote identification. Building on Study 1, which focused on single social identities, Study 2 examined the intersections of multiple social identities among students who were engaged in extracurricular activities (N = 1,497). Specifically, the ways in which cross-ethnic contact in extracurricular activities is associated with complex, inclusive social identities, as well as with cross-ethnic friendships and attitudes about ethnic outgroups, were investigated. Hierarchical linear modeling revealed that greater cross-ethnic contact in activities was linked with both cross-ethnic friendships in activities and complex, inclusive social identities, each of which were associated with more positive ethnic intergroup attitudes. Thus, opportunities for cross-ethnic contact in activities must be present and taken advantage of to promote positive intergroup attitudes. Together, these studies suggested that extracurricular activities are associated with both personal well-being at school and with more positive attitudes towards peers from different backgrounds. These findings have implications for the design and structure of extracurricular activities, suggesting that activities with greater peer interaction (e.g., through collaboration or building friendships) foster school-related adjustment and positive intergroup attitudes.

This analysis provides insight into how social identity theory applies to adolescent social interaction by examining the relationship between adolescents' perceived popularity and involvement in extracurricular activities. Involvement in extracurricular activities has long been an a rea of interest for socialogists because of its relationship to adolescent behavior and academic outcomes. Studies show that involvement in extracurriculum activities is related to delinquent behavior, academic achievement, self-esteem, and college aspirations. Although previous research on extracurricular activities analyzed a wide range of topics qualitatively, few studies examined involvement in extracurricular activities and popularity using quanitative analysis. Understanding how extracurricular activities influence popularity levels can provide valuable insight into the formation and maintenance of adolescent social identity and adolescent social systems. In this study, I address this issue by examining whether students who are involved in extracurricular activities are more likely than non-participants to identify themselves as popular. Because some studies suggest that different types of extracurricular activities result in varying outcomes, I analyze whether this relationship varies based on the type of activity in which the student is involved.

There has been a growing discussion in the fields of education and psychology about the relationship between social skill proficiency and academic excellence. However, the presence of extracurricular involvement as promoting both academic and social development has not been thoroughly explored. The most recent literature syntheses and meta-analyses on extracurricular activity participation were conducted in the 1980's. An updated review and quantitative look at the participation literature is due. The purpose of this study is to integrate participation studies from the 1990s and give summative information as to the impact of extracurricular activity participation on various educational and psycho-social characteristics. Of the 164 identified studies, 41 were included in these meta-analyses. The current analyses produced 6 different activity categories: general extracurricular activity, sports, work and vocational activities, performing arts, pro-social activities, and community-based activities. The current meta-analyses suggest student outcomes were significantly related to general extracurricular activity and pro-social activity participation. General activities and pro-social activities had the most impact on academic achievement, while performing arts and pro-social activities' participants reported the largest effect on identity and self esteem related outcomes. Sports and related activities (i.e. Cheerleading) were not as strongly linked to academic achievement indicators as anticipated and student workers had more negative outcomes than any other activity participants. In conclusion, the best outcomes for children and adolescents are brought about through well-built, developmentally appropriate structured activities. Moreover, the academic and social profits of extracurricular activities that have been examined in this study can be used to inform program planning and implementation.

Schools in a post COVID era continue to struggle with student engagement with extracurricular activities. The purpose of this study was to identify the reasons student participation in extracurricular activities is on the decline with students in the middle school grades. A qualitative case study was conducted to research the question of, why middle school students do not participate in extracurricular activities? The use of extant data from an open-ended qualitative questionnaire provided to students was analyzed for themes and trends to determine the level of middle school student participation with extracurricular activities. Results were compared to previous research conducted within the same field. The results showed that student's participation in extracurricular activities is primarily a result of student perception of achieving social emotional needs, familial involvement, and availability of time. Therefore, a need to study this area to identify the reasons students participate in extracurricular activities is needed. The study concluded that student involvement in extracurricular activities is still lacking, for various reasons, as identified from this case study. Further research in the field of education on this topic would benefit school extracurricular programs.

This study investigated perspectives on extracurriculars by immigrant, non-immigrant Latinx, and non-immigrant Black parents of high school students, as well as potential barriers, if any, to their children's ability to participate in extracurriculars. Drawing upon previous research that demonstrates the positive impact of extracurricular participation for students and the gaps in participation rates by immigrant, Latinx, and Black students, my study focused on parents' awareness of the benefits of extracurriculars, their source of information regarding extracurricular opportunities at their children's school, any potential challenges with allowing their children to participate in extracurriculars, and potential remedies they believe may allow for greater participation in extracurriculars for their children. My research design consisted of open-ended, semi-structured interview questions conducted with immigrant, non-immigrant Latinx, and non-immigrant Black parents of high school students. Once the data was collected and analyzed, I identified an overarching theme that schools must be more explicit and intentional in their engagement of parents, and thereby, students in regards to extracurricular participation, including its value for student success and increasing the participation rates of marginalized students. Additionally, while all parents interviewed identified barriers to extracurricular participation, such as time, transportation, cost, and safety, only the immigrant families in this study were unable to circumnavigate the barriers. The findings added to previous research from the perspective of students and teachers and aligned with the Authentic Development framework which views extracurriculars as a space to demonstrate authentic care, connect learning to social and democratic life as well as personal interests, develop social capital, and challenge hierarchical systems of oppression. Implications for further research are also discussed, as well as recommendations for school-based practitioners to improve access to and awareness of extracurricular opportunities at school sites.

Over the last few decades, a growing body of research has linked extracurricular activity participation with positive outcomes among high school students. Extracurricular activities often provide a rich environmental context for positive youth development, given that they provide opportunities for identity formation, the creation of interpersonal connections, and the development of social, emotional, academic, and/or career-related skills. However, there are no studies to date examining the relationship between extracurricular activity involvement and student outcomes among students enrolled in rigorous high school curricula (e.g., Advanced Placement [AP] and International Baccalaureate [IB]). The purpose of the current study was to extend the current understanding of the relationship between extracurricular activity involvement and academic and mental health outcomes for youth enrolled in AP and IB programs by investigating the levels of extracurricular activity participation among AP/IB students, and examining whether participation predicted student success in terms of academic and mental health outcomes. Given the increased academic demands faced by this group of students, this study aimed to also investigate the overscheduling hypothesis to see whether there was a curvilinear relationship between extracurricular activity involvement and student success (i.e., a point of diminishing return). In addition, this study examined whether the program type (i.e., AP or IB) moderated the relationship between extracurricular activity participation and student outcomes. Using data obtained from a larger research project led by Dr. Shannon Suldo and Dr. Elizabeth Shaunessy-Dedrick (Institute of Education Science: R305A100911), results indicated that on average, AP and IB students (N= 2,379) reported being involved in 3-4 different extracurricular activity types and spent approximately 5-9 hours per week involved in extracurricular activities. Findings also revealed that compared to AP students, IB students participated in a greater number of types of activities (3.38 vs. 3.89) and more hours of activities per week (3.03 vs. 3.18, where “3” corresponds to 5-9 hours per week). Although a significant difference in the overall levels of involvement in extracurricular activities was observed between AP and IB students, these differences did not translate into differences in associations between extracurricular involvement and student outcomes. Finally, this study found significant linear associations between the breadth of extracurricular activity participation and higher levels of life satisfaction, lower levels of psychopathology, higher GPAs, and higher AP/IB exam scores. Significant linear relationships between the intensity of extracurricular activity participation and lower levels of psychopathology and higher GPAs were also observed. Regarding the overscheduling hypothesis, results from the current study found curvilinear relationships between breadth of participation and AP/IB exam scores and GPA, with optimal levels of breadth of 4.1 and 5.2 types of extracurricular activities, respectively. Moreover, curvilinear relationships were also observed between intensity of participation and students psychopathology and GPA, with optimal intensity scores of 3.2 and 3.3 (i.e., between the “5-9” and “10-19” hours per week response option categories), indicating that participation in 20 or more hours of activities per week was associated with diminishing outcomes. Implications of findings for school psychologists and educational stakeholders, as well as future directions for research are discussed.
