Schools in a post COVID era continue to struggle with student engagement with extracurricular activities. The purpose of this study was to identify the reasons student participation in extracurricular activities is on the decline with students in the middle school grades. A qualitative case study was conducted to research the question of, why middle school students do not participate in extracurricular activities? The use of extant data from an open-ended qualitative questionnaire provided to students was analyzed for themes and trends to determine the level of middle school student participation with extracurricular activities. Results were compared to previous research conducted within the same field. The results showed that student's participation in extracurricular activities is primarily a result of student perception of achieving social emotional needs, familial involvement, and availability of time. Therefore, a need to study this area to identify the reasons students participate in extracurricular activities is needed. The study concluded that student involvement in extracurricular activities is still lacking, for various reasons, as identified from this case study. Further research in the field of education on this topic would benefit school extracurricular programs.

The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on PK-12 education has halted traditional education but has also fostered innovation in distance learning, parental involvement in their children's education, and families' coping mechanisms when forced to "self-quarantine." The educational community is thirsting for strategies, methods, and tools to help with prevention of gaps in the education of youth during this pandemic and in preparation of future global crises. Educational Recovery for PK-12 Education During and After a Pandemic builds awareness of the needs prevalent to the education of PK-12 students effectively during and after the COVID-19 pandemic and provides tools and strategies to assist these students as they grapple with new teaching and learning styles. This book provides timely information to support new modes of teaching and learning during this unprecedented time and fosters traditional methods of education while concurrently respecting guidelines set by the CDC to keep students safe and eliminate gaps in learning. It also benefits the educational community by leading the field in innovative steps to effectively educate PK-12 students so they will continue to be contributing members of society albeit surviving the most devastating epidemic in the last 100 years. Focusing on a wide range of topics such as student mental health, learning gaps, and best teaching practices, this book is ideal for teachers, administrators, district superintendents, counselors, psychologists, social workers, parents, academicians, researchers, and students.

Holistic student development encompasses not only academic learning but also the development of skills such as problem solving and analysis while simultaneously recognising moral and emotional growth. Earlier research focused on the benefits of engagement with extracurricular activities and the broader non-formal curriculum in university settings. Studies concerned with the involvement of widening participation groups in extracurricular activities (ECAs) expressed concern that these groups do not enjoy equal access to extracurricular activities. Consequently, they may not be able to avail of vital social interaction, which can provide opportunities for accumulating social and cultural capital. To investigate this the researcher adopted a qualitative case study approach to gather data from nine graduates of the Dublin City University (DCU) Access programme. These graduates have come through a period of intensive, high-quality engagement with ECAs as validated and certified by the DCU Uaneen Module examination process. Semi-structured interviews, as well as archival record and documentation, generated valuable insights into the experience of access students in a university setting and the creation of capital through their involvement with the learning milieu outside the classroom. The data were coded and queried using NVivo software and organised using thematic analysis. Interviews with the directors of two university access programmes provided further insights and observations. The findings are presented in a case study report with supporting evidence. The results suggest that the graduates did benefit, both personally and professionally, through their engagement and are in a position to recognise and appreciate this. Several recommendations are made which are intended to create an environment, which encourages and facilitates students who enter through the access programmes to fully and meaningfully engage with extracurricular activities thereby promoting the creation of capital and other beneficial personal and professional outcomes.

While there is evidence to support the notion that extracurricular activities have a positive impact on student success and development, the reasons why students participate in these activities, why they continue to participate in these activities, and why these activities lead to better educational outcomes are unclear. This study was conducted at three high schools in a county in northeast Florida with a total n of 131 students. This study used three theories as lenses to examine how student-teacher relationships impacted student engagement in extracurricular activities and in turn student achievement: Self-Systems Processing (Connell & Wellborn, 1991), Attachment Theory (Bowlby, 1969), and School Belonging (Goodenow & Grady, 1993) to analyze the data collected from the surveys. This data collection for this study included both quantitative survey questions and open-ended qualitative survey questions that produced three main findings. First, overall, students involved in extracurricular activities had slightly higher mean-level perceptions about their student-teacher relationships (i.e., caring, trust, and help) than those not involved in extracurricular activities, but this difference was not statistically significant. Second, for students involved in extracurricular activities their perceptions of the student-teacher relationship were slightly higher for their extracurricular teachers than their general teachers, but again, not significantly so. Finally, there were no effects of extracurricular activity on academic achievement within this sample.
