Extremadura-Cáceres Travel-Guide, Spain. Extremadura Touristic Environment. The regions of Spain are diverse, and each boasts its own unique curiosities. The autonomous community of Extremadura in western Spain is no different. The rolling hills and wild, open land in this region are rich in local culture. To promote its distinct customs and cuisine, the regional government has created a network of museums called the Museos de Identidad, or Museums of Identity, dedicated to some of the foods, festivals and traditions found in Extremadura. Exploring Extremadura-Cáceres is a journey into the heart of old Spain, from the country's finest Roman ruins to mysterious medieval cities and time-worn villages. Mérida, Cáceres and Trujillo rank among Spain's most beautifully preserved historical settlements. Extremeño hamlets have a timeless charm, from the remote northern hills to sacred eastern Guadalupe and seductive Zafra on the cusp of Andalucía in the south. Few foreign travellers make it this far. Spaniards, however, know Extremadura as a place to sample some of inland Spain's best food: roasted meats, the pungent, creamy Torta del Casar cheese and the finest Monesterio jamón (ham). This is a region of broad blue skies and vast swathes of sparsely populated land with isolated farmhouses and crumbling hilltop castles. Wooded sierras rise along the northern, eastern and southern fringes, while the raptor-rich Parque Nacional de Monfragüe is Extremadura's most dramatic corner

Southern Iberia is in the top rank of European birding hotspots. The third edition of this popular book, first published in 1994, continues to ensure that visitors can make the most of the region's many attractions. Regular visits have brought the information on all sites up-to-date: maps, access details and species lists have received particular attention. Popular localities such as Donana, Monfrague and the Strait of Gibraltar get prominent treatment but the reader is encouraged to wander further afield to visit other, less well-known but rewarding sites, including a considerable number of additional localities which are new to this edition.

Extremadura, on the western border of Spain with Portugal, is an important area for wildlife and walking. There is a major reserve at Monfrague, which was designated a National Park in 2007, in addition to the Tagus River National Park. Monfrague is an outstanding birdwatching area, especially for raptors such as the Eurasion Black Vulture, Griffon Vulture, and the Spanish Imperial and Golden Eagles. With a Mediterranean climate influenced in the north where it is continental, and to the west where the influence of the Atlantic make it milder, this is a year-round destination for dedicated walkers."

Stately Segovia is perched high on a rocky promontory overlooking the rivers Erasma and Clamores at their convergence. In the distance 12 km (7.5 miles) away is the silhouette of the Sierra de Guadarrama. The Moorish Alc zar is seated precariously at the edge of the cliff, the Gothic tower of the Cathedral is centered in the Plaza May∠̈ the famous Roman aqueduct is at the base of the hill. The lofty city of vila is the highest provincial capital in Spain, crowning with its Herculean wall a rough landscape strewn with granite boulders. The Sierra de Gredos in the south of the province forms a scenic backdrop to vila and beautiful rolling land lies in between; in its foothills along rivers, small mountain villages have embraced rural travelers and offer facilities and instruction for hiking, climbing and fishing in the area. In the city, the remarkable condition of the walls, and the wealth of Renaissance palaces and Romanesque churches placed in and around them along a maze of cobblestone streets makes for a modern-day medieval crusade. At the end of the 19th century a mining railway was being cut through the diminutive Sierra de Atapuerca east of Burgos when a series of caverns laden with prehistoric fossils was unearthed. During the course of the next century a veritable goldmine of prehistoric sites was discovered dating back over a million years and marking the Sierra de Atapuerca as the earliest human settlement in Europe. These are just a few of the amazing attractions in the region of Spain. The guide contains all the information you need, from where to stay and eat to what to see and do. Plus there are hundreds of color photos.
