As climate has warmed over recent years, a new pattern of more frequent and more intense weather events has unfolded across the globe. Climate models simulate such changes in extreme events, and some of the reasons for the changes are well understood. Warming increases the likelihood of extremely hot days and nights, favors increased atmospheric moisture that may result in more frequent heavy rainfall and snowfall, and leads to evaporation that can exacerbate droughts. Even with evidence of these broad trends, scientists cautioned in the past that individual weather events couldn't be attributed to climate change. Now, with advances in understanding the climate science behind extreme events and the science of extreme event attribution, such blanket statements may not be accurate. The relatively young science of extreme event attribution seeks to tease out the influence of human-cause climate change from other factors, such as natural sources of variability like El Niño, as contributors to individual extreme events. Event attribution can answer questions about how much climate change influenced the probability or intensity of a specific type of weather event. As event attribution capabilities improve, they could help inform choices about assessing and managing risk, and in guiding climate adaptation strategies. This report examines the current state of science of extreme weather attribution, and identifies ways to move the science forward to improve attribution capabilities.

The ultimate guide to the planet-altering effects of extreme weather, featuring full-color photos and fascinating explanations of how weather systems work?now in paperback Recent decades have brought record temperatures, devastating storms, and killer waves, which have in turn spurred widespread curiosity about how such weather systems develop. Organized by weather event?including hurricanes, winter storms, lightning, tornadoes, floods, heat waves, and more?Extreme Weather takes an eye-popping look at exactly how meteorological systems work and evenhandedly discusses the impact human activity has had in altering both weather and climate. H. Michael Mogil presents the results of his 35 years of meteorological research in a comprehensive overview of extreme weather systems, noting historical trends as well as what to expect in the future. He also explains how many events occur because the earth's environment self-regulates, while others may be influenced by such factors as rising temperatures in cities, deforestation, and population increases. Hundreds of color photographs, detailed charts and graphs, and fascinating sidebars make Extreme Weather essential reading for anyone interested in the physical forces that shape our planet. "Extreme Weather stands out for its thoughtful and unsensational treatment of weather." ?Financial Times "Timely?eye-opening!" ?Philadelphia Inquirer

Extreme Weather Events And Human Health written by Rais Akhtar and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-11-15 with Social Science categories.

This edited book assesses the impacts of various extreme weather events on human health and development from a global perspective, and includes several case studies in various geographical regions around the globe. Covering all continents, it describes the impact of extreme weather conditions such as flash floods, heatwaves, cold waves, droughts, forest fires, strong winds and storms in both developing and developed countries. The contributing authors also investigate the spread of diseases and the risk to food security caused by drought and flooding. Further, the book discusses the economic damage resulting from natural disasters including hurricanes. It has been estimated that in 2017 natural disasters and climate change resulted in economic losses of 309 billion US dollars. Scientists also predict that if nothing is done to curb the effects of climate change, in Europe the death toll due to weather disasters could rise 50-fold by the end of the 21st century, with extreme heat alone causing more than 150,000 deaths a year, as the report on global warming of 1.5°C warns that China, Russia and Canada’s current climate policies would steer the world above a catastrophic 5°C of warming by the end of 2100. As such, the book highlights how the wellbeing of different populations is threatened by extreme events now and in the foreseeable future.

Climate Change: Evidence and Causes is a jointly produced publication of The US National Academy of Sciences and The Royal Society. Written by a UK-US team of leading climate scientists and reviewed by climate scientists and others, the publication is intended as a brief, readable reference document for decision makers, policy makers, educators, and other individuals seeking authoritative information on the some of the questions that continue to be asked. Climate Change makes clear what is well-established and where understanding is still developing. It echoes and builds upon the long history of climate-related work from both national academies, as well as on the newest climate-change assessment from the United Nations' Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. It touches on current areas of active debate and ongoing research, such as the link between ocean heat content and the rate of warming.

Weather can take a turn for the worse with little to no warning. Following severe or extreme weather patterns has proven to be a great, albeit dangerous, way to study weather conditions. Some people even choose to chase extreme weather out of curiosity alone. This book provides information about different types of storm chasers, the technology they use, and the reasons they choose to put their lives in the path of danger. Primary sources and full-color photographs aid readers in understanding just how extreme weather can be.

High Impact Weather Events Over The Saarc Region written by Kamaljit Ray and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-11-19 with Science categories.

This book is a compilation of papers contributed by researchers and scientists from SAARC nations and deals with high-impact weather conditions, their prediction and potential consequences for populations in the SAARC region. There have been a number of recent advances in our understanding and prediction of cyclones, severe thunderstorms, squalls, heat and cold waves, droughts and heavy rainfall, based on the latest observational data and NWP modeling platform. The SAARC region is vulnerable to high-impact weather events because of geophysical features like high mountains, plateaus and vast oceans. As our climate continues to change over the coming years, the likelihood of extreme and potentially high-impact weather and climate events will be at its highest when natural and anthropogenic effects combine. All chapters were written by leading experts in their respective research and operational fields. The book reviews the latest research, future needs, forecasting skills and societal impacts of extreme weather events and offers high-quality reference material for weather forecasters, disaster managers and researchers.
