"Goethe, whose Roman Elegies drew on him, recognized in Propertius a romantic sensibility akin to his own. Ezra Pound's Homage to Sextus Propertius, on the other hand, read the poet as a fellow satirist and political dissident. Whatever the merits of these, and other, competing interpretations, Propertius has by now certainly come into his own, acquiring a whole new generation of readers. Indeed, in his 1997 play about the scholar-poet Housman, Tom Stoppard suggests that Propertius is one of the poets who were responsible for "the invention of love" in the West. The occasion of a lively new version by the poet David Slavitt invites a reexamination of Propertius, with particular attention to what most recommends him to us today: his sophisticated exploration of love and gender relations, his difficult--we might almost say modernist poetics, his strikingly independent politics that are concomitant with an overriding commitment to love and to literature, and, finally, his attempt later in life to reinvent himself and his art."—from the foreword by Matthew S. Santirocco, New York University "David Slavitt's bold, bawdy, expansive and sinewy version of Propertius is a sleep stealer, a book of wonders that bursts through limitations and the concept of "enough." Slavitt's continually startling Propertius in Love brings to mind Pasternak's line that "the root of beauty is audacity." Through the dialectic of eros and mortality and the marriage of poet and translator, Latin and English, we are hurtled back to the site where the invention of love is reenacted."—Mark Rudman, winner of National Book Critics Circle Award for his poetic trilogy, Rider, The Millennium Hotel, and Provoked in Venice. His latest book is The Couple.

Professor Sullivan proposes what was, at the time of publication, a new view on Propertius' poetic development and his place in the social political and literary circles of the day. His was an important re-evaluation. It finally banished the picture of Propertius as a simple romantic, apprehended dimly through poor texts and an obscure vocabulary.

Flamboyant and passionate, the love poems of Propertius are among the most beautiful to have been written in any language. In this eloquent and consistently faithful translation, W. G. Shepherd does full justice to the work of this remarkable Latin poet. Born about 48 B.C. in Umbria, Sextus Propertius was one of a group of poets influenced by Greek Alexandrian mannerism who developed the genre of Roman love elegy. Through shifting moods of ecstasy and frustration, his early works celebrate his obsessive love for his mistress, Cynthia. All his work is distinguished by strong visual imagery, richness of language, and an intensely personal style.

Diptych Rome-London presents the two undisputed masterpieces of Pound's pre-Cantos work––the long poems "Homage to Sextus Propertius" and "Hugh Selwyn Mauberley." Created in the aftermath of World War I, the poems ironically consider the place of the artist in "a botched civilization." "Homage to Sextus Propertius" (1917) is a free translation from the Latin, an homage to the Roman poet; praising its "enormous freedom and range of tone," Hugh Kenner remarked that "few more original poems exist in English." "Hugh Selwyn Mauberly" (1920) is described in A. Walton Litz's clear and helpful introduction as a "master document of literary modernism." It was also T.S. Eliot's favorite Pound poem: "I am quite certain of 'Mauberley,' whatever else I am certain of... a great poem, a document of an epoch."

The Poetry Book Society Autumn 2018 Recommended Translation. Asked to name the great Latin love poets, today's reader is likely to offer Catullus, Ovid, Virgil, Horace. Propertius, a successor of the first and influential peer to the others, has not been blessed by posterity. Yet at their best his poems match any of the period. They are poems of love, of desire, of insecurity and obsession: of struggle, too, as they resist the Augustan Empire's attempts to turn its love poets into propagandists. The result is a highly refined irony, a subtlety of tone and humour that is unique. Patrick Worsnip's translations bring out Propertius' playfulness and his psychological acuity, reinstating his poems at the heart of Latin literature's golden age.

Ezra Pound And Roman Poetry written by Peter Davidson and has been published by Rodopi this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1995 with American poetry categories.

Ezra Pound and Roman Poetry is an examination of a crucial phase in the development of Pound as translator and, therefore, of creative translation in the twentieth century. The book provides a survey of Pound's attempt to appropriate the poetry of Classical Rome, by tracing the histories of the poet's involvement with Horace, Virgil, Catullus, Ovid and Propertius, in order to express his own marginal position within London during the First World War. No extensive critical discussion is attempted, but attention is given to Pound's critical writings on the Latin poets as well as his translations from their work. Dr Davidson also treats other aspects of Pound's problematic relation to the Classical Tradition: the use and abuse of dictionaries; Laforgue and Baudelaire as a third term haunting Pound's translations; the difficult monolith of English classicism; the invention of an oppositional romanitas. It is hoped that this work may encourage others to produce the comprehensive survey which Pound's sustained and Protean relationship to the classical languages would appear to demand. Pound's readings of Latin poetry are inevitably readings also of English poetry, in the context of England, and particularly London, in the first two decades of the twentieth century.
