O livro Física Moderna e Contemporânea está dividido em dois volumes. Neste volume (volume I) será abordado nos dois primeiros capítulos as teorias da relatividade especial e geral. Neles serão discutidos, desde os conceitos do movimento relativo, a inexistência do éter, a constância da velocidade da luz e os postulados de Einstein da relatividade especial até o princípio de equivalência e as principais ideias da relatividade geral. Os capítulos três ao seis serão dedicados as ideias básicas da física quântica, abordando os aspectos da quantização da carga elétrica e da energias, os modelos atômicos e a estrutura do átomo, fenômenos corpusculares e ondulatórios, entre outros tópicos. No capítulo sete serão expostas algumas interpretações quânticas e a existência de certos paradoxos, que provocaram intensos debates e culminaram com grandes avanços na física. É nesses paradoxos que a natureza quântica mostra a sua verdadeira face, deixando-nos perplexos na maioria das vezes. Quando se estuda um certo fenômeno a partir de conceitos microscópicos, o número envolvido de variáveis é gigantesco. Descrever cada uma dessas variáveis é praticamente impossível e talvez não necessário pois, geralmente o que nos interessa é a manifestação macroscópica produzida pelo conjunto de muitas dessas partículas. Por isso se utiliza conceitos de estatística, formando uma área muito importante da física, chamada física estatística, que será apresentada no capítulo oito. A física da matéria condensada é uma área da física quântica onde se trata da compreensão das propriedades mecânicas, térmicas, magnéticas e ópticas da matéria condensada. O capítulo nove trata dos semicondutores, uma classe de materiais que revolucionaram e prometem ainda muito para o desenvolvimento da eletrônica. Os supercondutores, que são elementos ou ligas que conduzem eletricidade ou calor sem oferecer nenhuma resistência, são abordados no capítulo 1

No capítulo 17 será abordado os principais tipos de explosivos nucleares, seus modos de funcionamento, poder de destruição e ameaça que causam em relação à paz no planeta Terra. Os estudos referentes à fusão nuclear controlada, uma possível fonte energética do futuro, fez com que se desenvolvesse uma nova área de pesquisa: a física de plasma. Aspectos relacionados aos processos de fusão, realizados em grandes máquinas, serão apresentado no capítulo 18. O avanço na pesquisas em física, aliado ao desenvolvimento de novas tecnologias, propiciou ao homem adentrar cada vez mais na estrutura do átomo, o qual revelou ser possuidor de um grande número de componentes, que se relacionam de maneira bastante complexa. Este assunto pertence à física de partículas e será tratado no capítulo 19. As pesquisas em física de partículas são bastante dependentes de resultados fornecidos pelos aceleradores de partículas, os quais consistem em máquinas, cada vez maiores e mais potentes, capazes de chocar partículas e fazê-las revelar suas estruturas internas, Os principais tipos de aceleradores e seus princípios de funcionamento estão descritos no capítulo 20.
