Animal Sensibility And Inclusive Justice In The Age Of Bernard Shaw written by Rod Preece and has been published by UBC Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-10-25 with Nature categories.

In search of insight into late Victorian ideas about animals and the animal rights movement, Rod Preece explores animal sensibility in the work of George Bernard Shaw. Shaw’s reformist thought – particularly what Preece calls inclusive justice, which aimed to eliminate the suffering of both humans and animals – emerges in relation to that of fellow reformers such as Edward Carpenter, Annie Besant, and Henry Salt. This fascinating account of the characters and crusades that shaped Shaw’s philosophy sheds new light not only on modernist thought but also on the relationship between historical socialism and the ethical treatment of animals.

Bernard Shaw S Book Reviews 1884 1950 written by Bernard Shaw and has been published by Penn State Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1991 with Literary Collections categories.

This new volume of Bernard Shaw's book reviews is a companion to Brian Tyson's previously edited collection of Shaw's earlier book reviews. Here Tyson collects seventy-three of the best remaining literary book reviews written by Shaw throughout his lifetime. Two-thirds of the reviews appear in book form for the first time, the originals residing in the archives of newspaper libraries, and only three of the remainder have been reprinted within the last twenty years. Politics feature largely in the works that Shaw reviewed: there are books of socialist theory and its practical appearance in the Soviet Union, as well as books on the individualism of J. H. Levy, the anti-socialism of Thomas McKay, and the economics of E. C. K. Gonner and Philip Wicksteed. There is often an immediacy about the books reviewed, too: discussion of books on World War I, the Soviet Revolution, women's suffrage, the British General Strike of 1926, and World War II all take place concurrently with the events. Many of the works reviewed are biographies, which give Shaw the opportunity to reveal his personal acquaintance with their subjects, including Samuel Butler, William Morris, and Dean Inge. This widely varied collection sparkles with wit and wisdom, taking us briskly through Shaw's own writing life, beginning when he was relatively unknown and concluding when he was a legend.

The Reorganisation Of British Local Government written by John Dearlove and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1979-09-20 with Political Science categories.

This volume was first published in 1979, just a few years after the Local Government Act of 1972 redrew the map of British local government. Local authorities were also encouraged to change their organization and methods of work; anxiety was expressed about finance, councillor 'calibre' and the credibility of the whole system itself; and neighbourhood councils and public participation in planning were introduced. John Dearlove's aim is to make sense of these changes and the discussion they generated. He does this by showing that both the official case for reorganization and the academic discussion of it have hindered their own understanding by uncritically accepting superficial traditional wisdoms which fail to reveal the concealed ideological positions behind reorganization. Thus, he aims to develop a truly political perspective on reorganisation which is rounded out and given greater depth by the insertion at appropriate points of comparative material drawn from American experience and studies.

Making Histories written by CCCS and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-12-16 with History categories.

First published in 2006. History and politics are fundamentally connected – indeed historians themselves have often made links between the two explicit. Making Histories explores the relationship between history and politics as it has developed in histories which are critical of the dominant, academic traditions of history writing, and makes a substantial contribution to the debate about the most appropriate way to handle the relations between theory and history. Part One is concerned with the development of ‘people’s history’ – a social history with popular sympathies and links with radical politics. Three phases are discussed: the work of the Hammonds, the Communist Party Historians’ Group of the 1950s, and the historical-political projects of E. P. Thompson. Part Two focuses on the relation between history and theory within Marxism generally and argues that philosophical and methodological assumptions play a key role in more narrowly empirical and historical debates. Part Three presents discussions of three newer forms of political history writing which take a more ‘popular’ turn: oral history, the public construction of the national past in the form of National Heritage or community, and a feminist assessment of histories of the suffragette movement. In challenging received opinion about the scope of ‘history’, the authors stress that historiography is concerned not with the past, but with the relation between the past and the present and argue that popular conceptions of history have an importance usually denied or ignored by academic historians.
