Parole in cui si declina un'identità ferita, epoche smarrite, passaggi di senso e nuove configurazioni testuali: lo sguardo dello storico si lascia interrogare dalla selva di opere disseminate lungo un arco temporale che ha segnato la nascita della modernità e prova a individuarne i punti di viraggio, l'ambiguo oscillare tra ortodossia e trasgressione, l'equivoco che grava sui significati quando pretendono di imporre un senso unico o definitivo. Attraverso le analisi di Certeau le scritture mistiche, solo apparentemente ai margini di società in cerca di stabilità, mostrano la loro carica eversiva e - insieme - fondatrice di nuovi assetti del pensiero: da Nicola Cusano a Giovanni della Croce, da Surin a Pascal e fino alle glossolalie studiate da Saussure, la singolarità dell'esperienza mistica - «intuizione dell'assoluto in maniera singolare» - esplode nella storia come un impossibile che cerca di tradursi e impone al lavoro dello storico di riconfigurare continuamente gli strumenti delle sue indagini.
