Face analysis is essential for a large number of applications such as human-computer interaction or multimedia (e.g. content indexing and retrieval). Although many approaches are under investigation, performance under uncontrolled conditions is still not satisfactory. The variations that impact facial appearance (e.g. pose, expression, illumination, occlusion, motion blur) make it a difficult problem to solve. This book describes the progress towards this goal, from a core building block – landmark detection – to the higher level of micro and macro expression recognition. Specifically, the book addresses the modeling of temporal information to coincide with the dynamic nature of the face. It also includes a benchmark of recent solutions along with details about the acquisition of a dataset for such tasks.

This volume contains original, refereed worldwide contributions. They were prompted by presentations made at the ninth AMCTM Conference held in Goteborg (Sweden) in June 2011 on the theme of advanced mathematical and computational tools in metrology and also, in the title of this book series, in testing. The themes in this volume reflect the importance of the mathematical, statistical and numerical tools and techniques in metrology and testing and, also in keeping the challenge promoted by the Metre Convention, to access a mutual recognition for the measurement standards.

The 2010 edition of the European Conference on Computer Vision was held in Heraklion, Crete. The call for papers attracted an absolute record of 1,174 submissions. We describe here the selection of the accepted papers: Thirty-eight area chairs were selected coming from Europe (18), USA and Canada (16), and Asia (4). Their selection was based on the following criteria: (1) Researchers who had served at least two times as Area Chairs within the past two years at major vision conferences were excluded; (2) Researchers who served as Area Chairs at the 2010 Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition were also excluded (exception: ECCV 2012 Program Chairs); (3) Minimization of overlap introduced by Area Chairs being former student and advisors; (4) 20% of the Area Chairs had never served before in a major conference; (5) The Area Chair selection process made all possible efforts to achieve a reasonable geographic distribution between countries, thematic areas and trends in computer vision. Each Area Chair was assigned by the Program Chairs between 28–32 papers. Based on paper content, the Area Chair recommended up to seven potential reviewers per paper. Such assignment was made using all reviewers in the database including the conflicting ones. The Program Chairs manually entered the missing conflict domains of approximately 300 reviewers. Based on the recommendation of the Area Chairs, three reviewers were selected per paper (with at least one being of the top three suggestions), with 99.

It was an honor and a pleasure to organizethe 13th International Conference on Computer Analysis of Images and Patterns (CAIP 2009) in Mu ̈nster, Germany. CAIP has been held biennially since 1985: Berlin (1985), Wismar (1987), Leipzig (1989), Dresden (1991), Budapest (1993), Prague (1995), Kiel (1997), Ljubljana (1999), Warsaw (2001), Groningen (2003), Paris (2005), and Vienna (2007). Initially, this conference series served as a forum for getting together s- entistsfromEastandWestEurope.Nowadays,CAIPenjoysahighinternational visibility and attracts participants from all over the world. For CAIP 2009 we received a record number of 405 submissions. All papers were reviewed by two, and in most cases, three reviewers. Finally, 148 papers were selected for presentation at the conference, resulting in an acceptance rate of 36%. All Program Committee members and additional reviewers listed here deserve a great thanks for their timely and competent reviews. The accepted papers were presented either as oral presentations or posters in a single-track program. In addition, wewereveryhappyto haveAljoscha Smolicand David G. Storkasourinvitedspeakerstopresenttheirworkintwofascinatingareas. With this scienti?c program we hope to continue the tradition of CAIP in providing a forum for scienti?c exchange at a high quality level. A successful conference like CAIP 2009 would not be possible without the support of many institutions and people. First of all, we like to thank all the authors of submitted papers and the invited speakers for their contributions. The Steering Committee members were always there when advice was needed.

Over the past years, businesses have had to tackle the issues caused by numerous forces from political, technological and societal environment. The changes in the global market and increasing uncertainty require us to focus on disruptive innovations and to investigate this phenomenon from different perspectives. The benefits of innovations are related to lower costs, improved efficiency, reduced risk, and better response to the customers’ needs due to new products, services or processes. On the other hand, new business models expose various risks, such as cyber risks, operational risks, regulatory risks, and others. Therefore, we believe that the entrepreneurial behavior and global mindset of decision-makers significantly contribute to the development of innovations, which benefit by closing the prevailing gap between developed and developing countries. Thus, this Special Issue contributes to closing the research gap in the literature by providing a platform for a scientific debate on innovation, internationalization and entrepreneurship, which would facilitate improving the resilience of businesses to future disruptions. One of the challenges for computational intelligence and biometrics is to understand how people process and recognize faces and to develop automated and reliable face recognition systems. Biometrics has become the major component in the complex decision making process associated with security applications. The many challenges addressed for face detection and authentication include cluttered environments, occlusion and disguise, temporal changes, robust training and open set testing. Reliable Face Recognition Methods seeks to comprehensively address the face recognition problem while gaining new insights from complementary fields of endeavor such as neurosciences, statistics, signal and image processing, computer vision, machine learning and data mining. This book examines the evolution of research surrounding the field to date, explores new directions, and offers specific guidance on the most promising venues for future research and development. Endorsements by: Ruud Bolle (IBM), John Daugman (Cambridge University, UK), David Zhang (Hong Kong Polytechnic University, China), Stan Li (Chinese Academy of Sciences, China), Tom Huang (University of Illinois, USA).

rd It is a pleasure and an honour both to organize ICB 2009, the 3 IAPR/IEEE Inter- tional Conference on Biometrics. This will be held 2–5 June in Alghero, Italy, hosted by the Computer Vision Laboratory, University of Sassari. The conference series is the premier forum for presenting research in biometrics and its allied technologies: the generation of new ideas, new approaches, new techniques and new evaluations. The ICB series originated in 2006 from joining two highly reputed conferences: Audio and Video Based Personal Authentication (AVBPA) and the International Conference on Biometric Authentication (ICBA). Previous conferences were held in Hong Kong and in Korea. This is the first time the ICB conference has been held in Europe, and by Programme Committee, arrangements and by the quality of the papers, ICB 2009 will continue to maintain the high standards set by its predecessors. In total we received around 250 papers for review. Of these, 36 were selected for oral presentation and 93 for poster presentation. These papers are accompanied by the invited speakers: Heinrich H. Bülthoff (Max Planck Institute for Biological Cybernetics, Tüb- gen, Germany) on “What Can Machine Vision Learn from Human Perception?”, - daoki Furui (Department of Computer Science, Tokyo Institute of Technology) on “40 Years of Progress in Automatic Speaker Recognition Technology” and Jean-Christophe Fondeur (SAGEM Security and Morpho, USA) on “Large Scale Deployment of Biom- rics and Border Control”.
