Faces of the Gone by Brad Parks won the Shamus Award for Best First Novel and the Nero Award for Best American Mystery--it is the first book to receive both awards. The book was named to lists of the year's best mystery debuts by the Chicago Sun-Times and South Florida Sun-Sentinel. Four bodies, each with a single bullet wound in the back of the head, stacked like cordwood in a weed-choked vacant lot: That's the front-page news facing Carter Ross, investigative reporter with the Newark Eagle-Examiner. Immediately dispatched to the scene, Carter learns that the four victims—an exotic dancer, a drug dealer, a hustler, and a mama's boy—came from different parts of the city and didn't seem to know one another. The police, eager to calm jittery residents, leak a theory that the murders are revenge for a bar stickup, and Carter's paper, hungry for a scoop, hastily prints it. Carter doesn't come from the streets, but he understands a thing or two about Newark's neighborhoods. And he knows there are no quick answers when dealing with a crime like this. Determined to uncover the true story, he enlists the aide of Tina Thompson, the paper's smoking-hot city editor, to run interference at the office; Tommy Hernandez, the paper's gay Cuban intern, to help him with legwork on the streets; and Tynesha Dales, a local stripper, to take him to Newark's underside. It turns out that the four victims have one connection after all, and this knowledge will put Carter on the path of one very ambitious killer.

Twenty gritty stories by the Academy Award–winning writer of On the Waterfront and A Face in the Crowd. Despite growing up among Hollywood’s most powerful producers and movie stars in the 1920s and ’30s, Budd Schulberg was always a populist at heart. In this collection of his best short fiction, Schulberg takes readers from the halls of privilege in Los Angeles to smoky dives and dockyard slums in New York. His eye for detail and nose for trouble render characters as vividly as a Weegee photograph. These stories also represent the great clash of people and ideas in mid-century America. The collection includes “The Arkansas Traveler,” the story Schulberg adapted into the influential, prescient film A Face in the Crowd starring Andy Griffith. This ebook features an illustrated biography of Budd Schulberg including rare images and never-before-seen documents from the author’s estate.

Generations later, their similarly emaciated descendants live in a compound where they are isolated from the planet's normal inhabitants. The new kommissar of the compound, Lucian Yeardance, cares for his charges and alleviates their suffering with the narcotic heartsease. despite the open revulsion the normal inhabitants show for the maimed men and women, Luican determines to find out what the dread disease really is. Still, he is unprepared for the appalling discovery he makes: except for the open lesions and missing limbs and digits, not one of the muphormers shows a sign of any disease.

DEAD MAN RIDING Clint Adams has seen many a peculiar sight during his travels across the frontier. But none have startled him more than the dead man seated ramrod straight on the back of a runaway horse—tied to the saddle, and tortured to boot. Before burying the man, Clint finds a letter in his pocket addressed to Bonnie Shaughnessey of Estes Canyon, Utah. Hospitality and hostility go hand in hand in Estes Canyon. The warm welcome Clint receives from the sultry owner of the local eatery is nearly eclipsed by the rough treatment he receives from those on both sides of the law. The book offers a new angle on long-standing questions about the categorial status of English participles and gerunds. The book makes a major point: participles are not verb forms which behave like adjectives, but actually are adjectives, linked with verbs via derivation. It argues that observed differences between participles and adjectives, which in the past have prompted linguists to draw a category distinction between them, are in reality due to the non-prototypical semantics of participles – a feature also found in other types of adjectives, with strikingly identical effects. This analysis then accounts for the word formation of adjectives such as boring, tired, drunk, which has always been mysterious. The book investigates the consequences of this analysis for our understanding of gerunds and V-ing-N compounds. With its comprehensive study of -ing forms, the book calls into question a number of widely-held assumptions – regarding the distinction between derivation and inflection, and the role of semantics in syntactic and morphological analysis. This book is of great interest to researchers and students in linguistics interested in morphology, syntax, semantics, lexical categorisation.

The Small Faces & Other Stories is a trip back in time, charting the rise and fall of one of the Sixties most energetic and successful bands. It is the extraordinary story of how this bold four-piece, led by mercurial cockney Steve Marriot, found fame and then splintered by the end of the decade to evolve into Humble Pie with Peter Frampton, and the Faces fronted by Rod Stewart. Along the way their trademark songs Itchycoo Park, All or Nothing, Stay With Me and Baby I Love Your Way would influence future generations of musicians such as Paul Weller, Ocean Colour Scene and Blur. By way of anecdote, interview and analysis, Uli Twelker and Roland Schmitt lift the lid on the bands’ complex histories and the explosive characters involved that built one of rock music’s most enduring and successful family trees.

No one ever really paid close attention to the faces of the missing children on the milk cartons. But as Janie Johnson glanced at the face of the ordinary little girl with her hair in tight pigtails, wearing a dress with a narrow white collar--a three-year-old who had been kidnapped twelve years before from a shopping mall in New Jersey--she felt overcome with shock. She recognized that little girl--it was she. How could it possibly be true? Janie can't believe that her loving parents kidnapped her, but as she begins to piece things together, nothing makes sense. Something is terribly wrong. Are Mr. and Mrs. Johnson really Janie's parents? And if not, who is Janie Johnson, and what really happened?
