Research shows that the benefits of pretend play in early childhood are vast and have positive lifelong effects. In order for a child to develop normally and properly in all areas of life (academically, socially, cognitively, physically, and emotionally), pretend play must be the main focus of early childhood education. Due to the newly established government imposed push down of academics, play time in early childhood programs has been the first area reduced or eliminated in order to meet these new demands. Due to the high stress levels of students and high retention rates in kindergarten, some districts are realizing the need to put play back into the curriculum. Unfortunately, many administrators and educators do not know how to fully understand how to correctly execute pretend play in the classroom. This project addresses the importance of implementing a quality pretend play program in early childhood classrooms and provides educators with the knowledge and skills to do so properly.

The first part of this two-part book on play in public education, contains chapters authored by 23 educators, most of whom had been colleagues or students of Professor Margaret B. McFarland to whose memory the book is dedicated, addresses the need to integrate child development research with classroom practice in order to provide developmentally appropriate play and learning opportunities. Topics addressed in this section include: the importance of play in child development; the role of children's play for three age groups; and the role of play in a second grade classroom. The second section examines the early childhood curriculum and the use of play as a vehicle of children's learning. Chapters in this section address: (1) the efficacy of activity-based learning in mathematics, multicultural education, and literature; (2) a checklist procedure for determining the capacity of students in a primary class to use play in the learning process; (3) intervention techniques that help young children adjust to school; (4) a play intervention case study; and (5) the broad implications of play in public education and in early childhood teacher education programs. Most chapters in the book contain a list of references relevant to the topic discussed. A 16- item bibliography of resources relating to play in public education is provided, and a brief description of the professional affiliations of the contributors is appended. (BC)

This book uses a collection of stories, or "cases," as a basis for reflection, discussion, and learning about the many roles "play" has in children's lives. Each of the 12 cases addresses an issue of play from one of three categories--the role of adults in play, the cultural meanings of play, and the issues related to play in special settings. Following the introduction, the chapters are: (1) "Can Too Many Cooks Spoil the Broth? Beliefs about the Teacher's Role in Children's Play (Spielberger and McLane); (2) "'Teacher, They Won't Let Me Play!' Strategies for Improving Inappropriate Play Behavior" (Bartolini and Lunn); (3) "Aggression in the Playroom: Teaching Conflict Resolution to Children" (Levin); (4) "'We Don't Play Like That Here!' Understanding Aggressive Expressions of Play" (Ardley and Ericson); (5) "What's Wrong with Playing Cowboys and Indians?: Teaching Cultural Diversity to Preschoolers" (Klein and Mills); (6) "'Eenie, Meenie, Mynie Mo': The Persistence of Racial Definitions in Play" (Malone-Fenner); (7) "'But Are They Learning Anything?' African American Mothers, Their Children, and Play" (Williams); (8) "The Welcoming Place: Tungasuvvingat Inuit Head Start Program" (Reynolds); (9) "Helping Parents Take the Lead: Preparing Children for Health Care Procedures" (Hartley); (10) "Roundabout We Go: A Playable Moment with a Child with Autism" (Phillips); (11) "Eddie Goes to School: Facilitating Play with a Child with Special Needs" (Allen and Brown); (12) "'Every Time They Get Started, We Interrupt Them': Children with Special Needs at Play" (Henderson and Jones). The chapters all include discussion questions and suggested readings and resources. (Contains 84 references.) (HTH)
