Academic Paper from the year 2010 in the subject Gender Studies, grade: B, , language: English, abstract: The main objectives of the study were to find out factors influencing women’s participation in economic activities in Uganda. Catering for both the positive and the negative factors. The positive factors such as age, education level of the women, accessibility to land, access to capital, and access to health facilities of women encouraged women to participate in economic activities. The negative factors such as illiteracy, lack of capital, men refusing their wives to work hindered women from participating in economic activities. However, despite government’s efforts to promote women emancipation and gender equality, women are still lagging behind in the participation of economic activities. It was found out that age, education, and access to land positively influenced the participation of women in economic activities. This was mainly because women who were mature in age had more responsibilities as compared to those who were young in age. Secondly, women who were educated had more knowledge and skills to enable them participate in economic activities as compared to the uneducated. Lastly, access to land increased productivity and was used as collateral to acquire credit. However, despite access to capital being one of the major factors, it negatively influenced women’s participation in economic activities since women feared these loans because of high interest rates and mis-use by their husbands. Therefore, Government should emphasize more facilitation of women’s education to enable them acquire the necessary skills that would help them participate fully in economic activities and also enable them empower the girl child who has dropped out of school to further her education.

There is a prevailing attitude that increasing womens economic participation leads to their empowerment, or increases their agency in influencing decision making. This is despite large data evidence to the contrary and acknowledgement by financial institutions that a link cannot be established. This thesis examines what impact labor participation has on womens influence in their community and their political participation, how non-income related skills like advocacy increases womens self-confidence and agency, and the role non-formal training and networks play in increasing womens participation in decision making and political participation. I find that when conducting a data comparison there does not appear to be a relationship between labor and political participation, but that Cambodian women believe income is key to increasing their influence. Also I find that non-income related skills, non-formal training and networks are important tools to deepen womens confidence and capacity, leading to sustainable improvement in participation in decision making. Also there is a new area of study, men and masculinity, which is now being used to provide gender relevant gender training to men. In other words, gender is not just about women changing.

Emerging markets are amongst some of the fastest-growing economies on the globe. However, it is necessary to enhance human capital to enable the long-term development of a nation. The theory states that the increase in workforce participation favorably impacts GDP per capita. Additionally, developing markets can grow even further if they increase women,Äôs rates in the labor market. The authors,Äô desire is to determine the main obstacles for women in the job market and identify the impact of female participation on national development. The authors applied the following methods of work: description and compilation of different literature and deduction method to show which relevant factors are recommended to make higher women,Äôs economic activity to impacts the economy in a broader sense. The results show that Emerging markets must overcome gender inequalities, properly enforce female-related regulations, and invest in human development. The results also point out the relevance of a country,Äôs level of development, culture, education, female-related laws, and their influence on women,Äôs decision or ability to work. The discussion demonstrates that the rate of women in the workforce is increasing, but it is still severely lower than the men,Äôs rate. The main issues are cultural stereotypes, limited access to the job market, and difficulties with combining work and childcare. When it comes to infrastructure and educational possibilities, remote areas are still underdeveloped. Furthermore, gender bias is still deeply rooted in rural society. The elimination of these stereotypes and the improvement (and enforcement) of women-related policies will contribute to higher female workforce participation in the future.

The Beyond Inequalities series presents the situation of women and men in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) as a region, and in each member country; and reviews the roles and responsibilities, access to and control over resources, decision-making powers, needs and constraints of women vis-a-vis men. The series is forward looking, based on an assessment that inequalities are now generally acknowledged as an impediment to development and economic growth in most countries and regions of the world. The twelve country profiles document and analyse information along themes drawn from the Critical Areas of Concern identified in the Beijing Platform for Action and derived from what the countries of the region consider to be priorities. Each profile is in three parts: Situation Analysis, Policies and Programmes, and the Way Forward, and each has references, bibliography, appendices, and illustrative tables, figures and boxes.

This book investigates the barriers to women’s economic empowerment in the Global South. Drawing on evidence from a wide range of countries, the book outlines important lessons and practical solutions for promoting gender equality. Despite global progress in closing gender gaps in education and health, women’s economic empowerment has lagged behind, with little evidence that economic growth promotes gender equality. International Development Research Centre’s (IDRC) Growth and Economic Opportunities for Women (GrOW) programme was set up to provide policy lessons, insights, and concrete solutions that could lead to advances in gender equality, particularly on the role of institutions and macroeconomic growth, barriers to labour market access for women, and the impact of women’s care responsibilities. This book showcases rigorous and multi-disciplinary research emerging from this ground-breaking programme, covering topics such as the school-to-work transition, child marriage, unpaid domestic work and childcare, labour market segregation, and the power of social and cultural norms that prevent women from fully participating in better paid sectors of the economy. With a range of rich case studies from Burkina Faso, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, Ghana, India, Kenya, Nepal, Rwanda, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, and Uganda, this book is perfect for students, researchers, practitioners, and policymakers working on women’s economic empowerment and gender equality in the Global South.

Data was collected from 387 respondents using structured questionnaire distributed to nine wards of Zanzibar and analyzed using Smart PLS. The descriptive analysis revealed that there is a high level of participation in decision-making among women community in Zanzibar whereby the mean is equal to 3.8519, and standard deviation is 0.75238. The Smart PLS analysis results indicated that there are significant negative relationships between level of education, nature of tourism activities and participation in decision making. Hence, this result indicates that the less educated the women are the less they participate in the decision-making. Further, the nature of tourism activities is also negatively affecting the decision to participate in the decision-making process.

Gender Equality And Inclusive Growth written by Raquel Fernández and has been published by International Monetary Fund this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-03-04 with Social Science categories.

This paper considers various dimensions and sources of gender inequality and presents policies and best practices to address these. With women accounting for fifty percent of the global population, inclusive growth can only be achieved if it promotes gender equality. Despite recent progress, gender gaps remain across all stages of life, including before birth, and negatively impact health, education, and economic outcomes for women. The roadmap to gender equality has to rely on legal framework reforms, policies to promote equal access, and efforts to tackle entrenched social norms. These need to be set in the context of arising new trends such as digitalization, climate change, as well as shocks such as pandemics.
