Case Study from the year 2016 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: A, International Islamic University Malaysia, course: Bachelor of Arts (Honours) English for International Communication, language: English, abstract: The purpose of this study is to investigate the factors affecting the level of English proficiency among International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) undergraduate students. A set of questionnaires were distributed online and data from a sample of 75 students were collected through Google Forms. Two demographic factors, namely gender and years of learning English, were used as the variables. The finding of the study suggests that the factors affecting the level of English proficiency among IIUM undergraduate students were not affected by gender but were affected by the duration of learning English. The factors that were contributing to the level of English proficiency among IIUM undergraduate students were language anxiety, students’ attitude and also peers, parental and teacher influences. Besides, the study also revealed that there is no significant relationship between cultural stereotypes and students’ performance in second language acquisition. The level of English proficiency among Malaysian students are often questioned. Despite learning English for almost 10 years in school, the majority of Malaysian students still encounter difficulties in using the language effectively especially in tertiary education. Many local graduates are still unemployed due to their lack of fluency in English.

Does English proficiency affect participation in online discussion? This study polled 14 students from a postgraduate online course that require online discussion. The students are divided into groups according to their home language spoken and self-assessed English proficiency, and measure against their participation level in the required discussion forums. It is found that students who speak English at home posts more and longer, and students who rate themselves proficient in English post more and longer. However, literature suggests that factors affecting participation are multifaceted. Although the current findings suggest a significant correlation between English proficiency and participation level, more work is required to understand the mechanism of the effects of language proficiency in online discussion participation. In today's globalized world, the language used most often is English. As Latha (2012), English has displayed the lingua franca for communication, business, education, and event worldwide. English holds a spot of éclat in our country. Still, after decades of colonial control, no indigenous language has grown up to replace English, either as a communication tool or as an official language. The learning of language is in order with the training plans on the implementation of the K to 12. This idea is also accurate in teaching English in the transition year of Junior High School. In Systems Plus College Foundation, the same predicament had been felt. The student's ability to express their feelings using the English language is complicated because several factors often hinder it; hence, knowing their proficiency level will lead the researcher to study further the factors affecting it. This research was conducted in the descriptive-evaluative method since it aimed to explain students' language proficiency levels. The survey was made to ascertain the language areas where participants are not that inclined or lacking in their actual state of practice. This design generated quantitative data that was investigated statistically, and the adoption of this design was based on the purpose of the research, the nature of data, and the interpretation of data applied in the study. This method collected data by forwarding the questionnaires to the participants, tabulating, and summarizing the results of the responses.Furthermore, this study concludes that the basic areas in the language areas are in the "approaching proficiency" level while the Grade 8 level can be considered struggling, as shown in their overall range score of 4.42. This study also revealed that the area "correct usage. This study also revealed7.70 (proficient). Lastly, the study unveiled that based on DepEd guidelines in the assessment and level of proficiency under the K to 12 curriculum, the Junior High School of SPCF English language proficiency is "Developing" with an overall index performance of 42.76 or in the scale of 2. With that, it was recommended t teachers continually update their students' performance, especially in the areas labeled as developing, and urge other subject teachers to use English as their medium of instruction and serve as the role model supporting the English Program at the school.
