JANET W. LERNER This timely volume explores issues pertinent to the emerging subject of college education for adults with learning disabilities. The inspiration for the book was a conference held at Barat College in Lake Forest Illinois on April 7, 1990, entitled College Students with Learning Disabilities: Reviewing the '80s and Planning for the '90s. The occasion was the celebration of the tenth anniversary of Barat College's program for college students with learning disabilities. Papers presented at this con ference, plus several additional invited chapters, and those of the co editors are included in this much needed publication. Only a few years ago, college was out of the question for most adults with learning disabilities. It is heartening to note that this situation has changed substantially over the last 15 or so years, with great strides in opportunities for adults with learning disabilities to acquire a college level education. From a slow beginning with programs such as the one at Barat College, there are today programs and support services in a variety of settings at a growing number of colleges and universities. Many indi viduals with learning disabilities can look forward to experiencing college and better preparing themselves for the future. The collection of papers in this book offers a comprehensive review of this exciting and challenging field.

Create campuses inclusive and supportive of disabled students, staff, and faculty Disability in Higher Education: A Social Justice Approach examines how disability is conceptualized in higher education and ways in which students, faculty, and staff with disabilities are viewed and served on college campuses. Drawing on multiple theoretical frameworks, research, and experience creating inclusive campuses, this text offers a new framework for understanding disability using a social justice lens. Many institutions focus solely on legal access and accommodation, enabling a system of exclusion and oppression. However, using principles of universal design, social justice, and other inclusive practices, campus environments can be transformed into more inclusive and equitable settings for all constituents. The authors consider the experiences of students, faculty, and staff with disabilities and offer strategies for addressing ableism within a variety of settings, including classrooms, residence halls, admissions and orientation, student organizations, career development, and counseling. They also expand traditional student affairs understandings of disability issues by including chapters on technology, law, theory, and disability services. Using social justice principles, the discussion spans the entire college experience of individuals with disabilities, and avoids any single-issue focus such as physical accessibility or classroom accommodations. The book will help readers: Consider issues in addition to access and accommodation Use principles of universal design to benefit students and employees in academic, cocurricular, and employment settings Understand how disability interacts with multiple aspects of identity and experience. Despite their best intentions, college personnel frequently approach disability from the singular perspective of access to the exclusion of other important issues. This book provides strategies for addressing ableism in the assumptions, policies and practices, organizational structures, attitudes, and physical structures of higher education.

Recent advances in neuroimaging and genetics technologies have enhanced our understanding of neurodevelopmental disorders in adults. The authors in this volume not only discuss such advances as they apply to adults with learning disorders, but also address their translation into clinical practice. One cluster of chapters addresses developmental concerns as children and adolescents with learning disorders approach young adulthood. Experts discuss dyslexia, language-based and writing disorders, perhaps the most widely studied group of learning disorders, from the point of view of neuroimaging and genetic underpinnings. Chapters on the neuroscience of nonverbal, math and executive function disorders are also included. Clinically-oriented chapters with case studies, recommendations for accommodation, and considerations for evaluation follow. Study of specialized populations - such as late high school students, college, medical and law students - further demonstrate how our expanded knowledge base may be applicable to clinical practice. The heterogeneity of adults with learning disorders, the complexity of their clinical presentation and co-existing disorders are addressed from both a scientific and clinical point of view demonstrating how empirical research and clinical practice inform each other. This volume will enhance the practice of clinicians and educators working with adults with neurodevelopmental disorders, as well as providing essential current information for researchers of adults with learning disorders.

How can education better support the mental health & wellbeing of young people? Research in the 1970s that addressed this question has since proven seminal to the development of two co-existing fields of research that continue to offer mutually informative insights: Developmental Psychopathology (DP) and Educational Effectiveness Research (EER). DP and EER share the common agenda of understanding factors that relate to individuals’ learning and development: DP focuses on the individual learning and developing in context, EER investigates the educational systems, structures, and processes that shape how individuals learn and develop. Given the complementarity of DP and EER, it is somewhat surprising that they have rarely joined forces and synthesised knowledge to develop a fuller understanding of the roles educational contexts play in the mental health and wellbeing of students. This Research Topic aims to stimulate such collaboration.
