Elizabeth Avery Meriwether was the author of many books, giving accurate and vivid descriptions of historical incidents of importance in the South. Her plots were widely regarded as skillfully conceived and developed, told with remarkable vigor, and true pictures of conditions that were passing away, making her books important additions to the literature of old Southern life. “Facts and Falsehoods Concerning the War of the South of 1861 and 1865,” which she wrote under the pen name George Edmonds and first published in 1904, was considered by Meriwether herself to be the most valuable book that she ever wrote or could write, because in it she told the truth about historical events: “This little work is offered. It does not aspire to the dignity of History. It is mostly a collection of facts under one cover, which I trust will prove of use to the future historians of the South. Perhaps the fittest title to this work would be “A Protest Against Injustice”—the injustice of misrepresentation—of false charges—of lies. The feeling of injustice certainly inspired the idea of this work. The greater number of the facts herein laid before the reader were not drawn from Southern or Democratic sources, but from high Republican authorities. Part first of this work presents Abraham Lincoln to the people of this generation as his contemporaries saw and knew him. The characteristics portrayed will be a revelation to many readers.”

Excerpt from Facts and Falsehoods: Concerning the War on the South, 1861-1865 This little work is offered. It does not aspire to the dignity of History. It is mostly a collection of facts under one cover, which I trust will prove of use to the future historians of the South. Perhaps the fittest title to this work would be "A Protest Against Injustice" - the injustice of misrepresentation - of false charges - of lies. The characteristics portrayed will be a revelation to many readers. As an offset to the falsity of Republican histories of the war of the 6o's, permit me to express the hope that in the near future our people will make more general use of those histories which are truthful and just to the South. For instance. the English historian, Percy Gregg's large history of the United States, might be condensed, or rather that part giving the story of the 6o's could be detached, and published in one small, cheap volume, so that every family in the South can own a copy. John A. Marshall's large volume, "American Bastiles," can be used in every Southern school to rouse in the hearts of boys and girls hatred of Despotism. S. D. Carpenter's "Logic of History," and Matthew Carey's "Democratic Handbook" should not be allowed to go out of print. Both of these books contain much that will be of great value to the future historian. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. One of the best-educated and most intellectual women of the South, Elizabeth Avery Meriwether, writing under the pen name of "George Edmonds," published this defense of the American South in 1904. Elizabeth and her husband, Minor Meriwether, were living in Memphis, when the war broke out. Elizabeth was living alone with her small children when Memphis fell to the Federals. Elizabeth was vocal in her displeasure with the occupation of General W. T. Sherman's oppressive troops. This concluded with Sherman ordering her out of her home and putting her on the street only weeks before the birth of her son, Lee Meriwether. Lee was born at the home of friends in Columbus, Mississippi, December 25, 1862. The exceptional book, using Northern sources, turns the tables and uses these sources in the defense of the Southern cause. With great clarity, the author proves the real agenda of the North under Abraham Lincoln's radical political party. The editor, a retired history teacher has supplied additional notes, a short biography of the author, and illustrations to the original publication.

This extremely rare book provides page after page of quotations from nearly exclusively Northern sources showing that, for the past 150 years, the American people have not been told the truth about the so-called "Civil War" and the true nature and agenda of Abraham Lincoln's Republican party. As the author points out, "Imperialists always look on the people as sheep, to be deceived and driven" and "despotism is a noxious plant, which hates the light and flourishes only in dark places." A people who are kept in ignorance of their past will offer no serious resistance to tyranny in the present and future. This book raises a much-needed voice in defense of the many thousands of Southerners who died, not for slavery, as modern revisionist historians claim, but for their right, and that of their posterity, to govern themselves in peace.
