Failure Of Brittle Materials Under Shock And Impact written by Arunachalam M. Rajendran and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-12-03 with Technology & Engineering categories.

The book focuses primarily on experimental and analytical methods developed over many years to characterize the deformation and fracture of brittle materials under dynamic loading conditions. The dynamic response of brittle materials is highly nonlinear and complex, with practical applications ranging from explosive excavation of rocks to the design of ceramic armor and the protection of spacecraft windows from meteor impacts. It provides a comprehensive exploration of the challenges and methodologies involved in impact experiments and computational modeling of brittle solids under shock and impact loading, making it essential reading for those seeking realistic solutions to blast and ballistic problems. For example, the book emphasizes the significance of validating numerical code solutions through simulations. This involves understanding and evaluating the impact of various factors such as appropriate boundary conditions, high-resolution finite element meshes, solution time steps, contact algorithms, interface modeling, artificial viscosity, erosion of elements, particle conversion, and model parameters on the accuracy of solutions. It selectively presents examples of modeling and simulations of ballistic problems drawn from the open literature. While numerous articles on the book's topic exist in the literature, this volume integrates key aspects of high strain rate impact experiments, modeling, and simulations of brittle failure in ceramics, rocks, oil shale, and cementitious materials across various stress and strain states. To the best of the authors' knowledge, no other compilation covers such a wide array of experimental techniques used in this field, particularly for ceramics, yet adaptable for other heterogeneous brittle solids. Despite the extensive literature on this subject, most impact experimental configurations have been limited to specific geometries and have not encompassed the broad range of techniques necessary to characterize and validate constitutive behaviors used in modern numerical codes. Many researchers and engineers are often unaware of the specialized experiments and models presented in international conference proceedings or technical presentations. This book addresses that gap by encompassing a broader range of unique impact experiments, constitutive and damage modeling, and computational simulations not found in any existing publication.

Shock Wave Phenomena And The Properties Of Condensed Matter written by Gennady I. Kanel and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-06-29 with Science categories.

One of the main goals of investigations of shock-wave phenomena in condensed matter is to develop methods for predicting effects of explosions, high-velocity collisions, and other kinds of intense dynamic loading of materials and structures. Based on the results of international research conducted over the past 30 years, this book is addressed not only to experts in shock-wave physics, but also to interested representatives from adjacent fields of activity and to students who seek an introduction to the current issues. With that goal in mind, the book opens with a brief account of the theoretical background and a short description of experimental techniques. The authors then progress to a systematic treatment of special topics, some of which have not been fully addressed in the literature to date.

A conference on Metallurgical Effects at High Strain Rates was held at Albuquerque, New Mexico, February 5 through 8, 1973, under joint sponsorship of Sandia Laboratories and the Physical Metallurgy Committee of The Metallurgical Society of AIME. This book presents the written proceedings of the meeting. The purpose of the conference was to gather scientists from diverse disciplines and stimulate interdisciplinary discussions on key areas of materials response at high strain rates. In this spirit, it was similar to one of the first highly successful con ferences on this subject held in 1960, in Estes Park, Colorado, on The Response of Metals to High Velocity Deformation. The 1973 conference was able to demonstrate rather directly the increased understanding of high strain rate effects in metals that has evolved over a period of roughly 12 years. In keeping with the interdisciplinary nature of the meeting, the first day was devoted to a tutorial session of invited papers to provide attendees of diverse backgrounds with a common basis of understanding. Sessions were then held with themes centered around key areas of the high strain rate behavior of metals.

Dynamic Failure of Materials and Structures discusses the topic of dynamic loadings and their effect on material and structural failure. Since dynamic loading problems are very difficult as compared to their static counterpart, very little information is currently available about dynamic behavior of materials and structures. Topics covered include the response of both metallic as well as polymeric composite materials to blast loading and shock loadings, impact loadings and failure of novel materials under more controlled dynamic loads. These include response of soft materials that are important in practical use but have very limited information available on their dynamic response. Dynamic fragmentation, which has re-emerged in recent years has also been included. Both experimental as well as numerical aspects of material and structural response to dynamic loads are discussed. Written by several key experts in the field, Dynamic Failure of Materials and Structures will appeal to graduate students and researchers studying dynamic loadings within mechanical and civil engineering, as well as in physics and materials science.

SUSI XIII contains the proceedings of the 13th International Conference in the successful series of Structures Under Shock and Impact. Since the first meeting in Cambridge, Massachusetts (1989) the conference has brought together the research works of scientists and engineers from a wide range of academic disciplines and industrial backgrounds that have an interest in the structural impact response of structures and materials. The shock and impact behaviour of structures is a challenging area, not only because of the obvious time-dependent aspects, but also due to the difficulties in specifying the external dynamic loadings, boundary conditions and connection characteristics for structural design and hazard assessment, and in obtaining the dynamic properties of materials. Thus, it is important to recognise and utilise fully the contributions and understand the emerging theoretical, numerical and experimental studies on structures, as well as investigations into the material properties under dynamic loading conditions. Any increased knowledge will enhance our understanding of these problems and thorough forensic studies on the structural damage after accidents will lead to improved design requirements. The range of topics in this very active field is ever expanding. The following list of topics gives an idea of the wide number of applications covered: Impact and blast loading; Energy absorbing issues; Interaction between computational; and experimental results; Aeronautical and aerospace applications; Response of reinforce concrete under impact; Response of building facades to blast; Seismic behaviour; Structural crashworthiness; Industrial accidents and explosions; Hazard mitigation and assessment; Active protection and security; Tunnel and underground; structures protection; Dynamic analysis of composite structures; Design against failure; Damage limitation.
