A NATIONAL BESTSELLER * A NEW YORK TIMES BOOK REVIEW EDITORS’ CHOICE * A WASHINGTON POST BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR "An invigorating work, deadly precise in its skewering of people, places and things . . . Stylish, despairing and very funny, Fake Accounts . . . adroitly maps the dwindling gap between the individual and the world." —Katie Kitamura, The New York Times Book Review A woman in a tailspin discovers that her boyfriend is an anonymous online conspiracy theorist in this “absolutely brilliant take on the bizarre and despicable ways the internet has warped our perception of reality” (Elle, One of the Most Anticipated Books of the Year). On the eve of Donald Trump's inauguration, a young woman snoops through her boyfriend's phone and makes a startling discovery: he's an anonymous internet conspiracy theorist, and a popular one at that. Already fluent in internet fakery, irony, and outrage, she's not exactly shocked by the revelation. Actually, she's relieved--he was always a little distant--and she plots to end their floundering relationship while on a trip to the Women's March in DC. But this is only the first in a series of bizarre twists that expose a world whose truths are shaped by online lies. Suddenly left with no reason to stay in New York and increasingly alienated from her friends and colleagues, our unnamed narrator flees to Berlin, embarking on her own cycles of manipulation in the deceptive spaces of her daily life, from dating apps to expat meetups, open-plan offices to bureaucratic waiting rooms. She begins to think she can't trust anyone--shouldn't the feeling be mutual? Narrated with seductive confidence and subversive wit, Fake Accounts challenges the way current conversations about the self and community, delusions and gaslighting, and fiction and reality play out in the internet age.

‘The book I wish I’d written? Whatever Hari Kunzru is publishing next’ Aravind Adiga ‘Astonishing, absorbing, terrifying. Immensely good.’ Philip Pullman '‘Red Pill stands as a final blast of sanity against this new, deranged reality. It is a literary masterpiece for a barbaric new world rapidly running out of room for literary masterpieces.’ The Spectator '[A] deeply intelligent and artfully constructed novel.' Financial Times From the author of White Tears comes a breathtaking, state-of-the-world novel about one man’s struggle to defend his values and create a reality free from the shadows of the past. ‘From now on when you see something, you’re seeing it because I want you to see it. When you think of something, it’ll be because I want you to think about it…’ And with those words, the obsession begins. A writer has left his family in Brooklyn for a three month residency at the Deuter Centre in Berlin, hoping for undisturbed days devoted to artistic absorption. When nothing goes according to plan, he finds himself holed up in his room watching Blue Lives, a violent cop show with a bleak and merciless worldview. One night at a party he meets Anton, the charismatic creator of the show, and strikes up a conversation. It is a conversation that leads him on a journey into the heart of moral darkness. A conversation thatthreatens to destroy everything he holds most dear, including his own mind. Red Pill is a novel about the alt-right, online culture, creativity, sanity and history. It tells the story of the 21st century through the prism of the centuries that preceded it, showing how the darkest chapters of our past haunt our present. More than anything, though, this is a novel about love and how it can endure in a world where everything else seems to have lost all meaning. Praise for White Tears ‘Exquisitely attuned’ Washington Post ‘Electrifying, subversive and wildly original’ TheNew Yorker 'A book that everyone should be reading right now' TIME Magazine ‘Haunting, doom-drenched, genuinely and viscerally disturbing...’ The Independent

Seminar paper from the year 2022 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,7, University of Siegen (Fakultät 1), course: Epochen der Literatur-, Kultur- und Mediengeschichte, language: English, abstract: In the following term paper, I will investigate how the narrator’s usage of social media is portrayed in Lauren Oyler’s "Fake Accounts" and how that reflects on the social media behaviour of contemporary young generations in real life. Following this introductory chapter, I will present theoretical approaches on the topic of affect and social media in the second chapter. In addition to that, I will discuss how intertwined processes of online presence and identity creation work within the sphere of the digital world. In the last part of the second chapter, I will briefly reflect on social media influencers and to what extent their roles and performances on social networks differ from average users. The third chapter constitutes an analysis of Oyler’s novel "Fake Accounts", as a recent autofictional novel thematizing common issues such as social media usage of young adults, by analysing the novel in the light of the theoretical framework of affect and unaffectedness. I will briefly take a look at the genre of autofiction and investigate to what extent the inclusion of autobiographical elements poses an important factor in regard to the overall topic and my research question. Moreover, I will determine how identity creation and self-staging is performed by the narrator in "Fake Accounts" and how real-life social media behaviour on behalf of young generations is mirrored or even criticized.

Active Measures written by Thomas Rid and has been published by Profile Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-04-23 with History categories.

We live in an age of subterfuge. Spy agencies pour vast resources into hacking, leaking, and forging data, often with the goal of weakening the very foundation of liberal democracy: trust in facts. Thomas Rid, a renowned expert on technology and national security, was one of the first to sound the alarm. Even before the 2016 election, he warned that Russian military intelligence was 'carefully planning and timing a high-stakes political campaign' to disrupt the democratic process. But as crafty as such so-called active measures have become, they are not new. In this astonishing journey through a century of secret psychological war, Rid reveals for the first time some of history's most significant operations - many of them nearly beyond belief. A White Russian ploy backfires and brings down a New York police commissioner; a KGB-engineered, anti-Semitic hate campaign creeps back across the Berlin Wall; the CIA backs a fake publishing empire, run by a former Wehrmacht U-boat commander that produces Germany's best jazz magazine.
