Es gab kaum einen gesellschaftlichen Bereich, der nicht von diesem Spektakel infiziert war. Auch wenn es sich bei der Weltmeisterschaft um einen zeitlich begrenzten Ausnahmezustand handelte, lässt sich daran dennoch ablesen, welche Begeisterung diesem Sport entgegen gebracht wird und welchen Stellenwert diesem in unserer Gesellschaft beigemessen wird. Auch außerhalb von Welt- und Europameisterschaften hat der Sport mangelnde gesellschaftliche Beachtung keineswegs zu beklagen. Woche für Woche strömen Hunderttausende in die Fußballarenen, um an diesem Ereignis teilzunehmen. Als der VFB Stuttgart in diesem Jahr Deutscher Meister wurde, legte der kollektive Freudentaumel die gesamte Innenstadt Stuttgarts für einen Nachmittag lahm. Es kann wohl unbestritten behauptet werden, dass Fußball der populärste Sport in diesem Lande ist. Wirft man einen nüchternen Blick auf den Fußball, so wird schnell deutlich, dass trotz der großen Begeisterung, dieser Sport auch seine Schattenseiten hat. Einige davon treten regelmäßig in den Medien in Erscheinung. Gewöhnlich handelt es sich hierbei um gewalttätige Ausschreitungen und rassistische, nationalistische und antisemitische Zuschauerhandlungen. Daher haftet den Fußballfans in der öffentlichen Wahrnehmung auch ein negativer Ruf an. Ob dieses Urteil in Anbetracht einer solch heterogenen Masse berechtigt ist oder nicht, soll nicht Gegenstand dieser Arbeit sein. Das Untersuchungsinteresse beschäftigt sich vielmehr um die folgende Frage: Existieren im Fußball als Zuschauersport Faktoren, die Gewalt und Rechtsextremismus strukturell fördern? [...]

This book traces international developments in the hooligan phenomenon since the Heysel tragedy of 1985. The authors make special reference to the troubled European championships in West Germany in 1988 and look critically at political responses to the problem. The authors used ‘participant observation’ in their research on British fans at the World Cup in Spain, and at matches in Rotterdam and Copenhagen, and capture the authentic voice of football hooliganism in their interviews. In this analysis of patterns of football violence the authors suggest some short-term proposals for restricting seriously violent and disorderly behaviour at continental matches and put forward a long-term strategy to deal with the root causes of hooligan behaviour.
