A colonização italiana no Rio Grande do Sul, a partir de 1875, representa um dos movimentos migratórios mais intensos visualizados até hoje na história da América Latina. Em pouco mais de três décadas, aproximadamente 100 mil imigrantes seriam instalados nas Colônias de Guaporé, Dona Isabel (Bento Gonçalves), Conde d ́Eu (Garibaldi), Antonio Prado, Veranópolis (Alfredo Chaves), Fundos de Nova Palmira / Nova Milano (Caxias do Sul) e Silveira Martins. Este processo de povoamento, por sua vez, foi responsável pela ocupação do solo na região sul do Brasil e destinava-se a suprir a diminuição da mão-de-obra após a promulgação de leis abolicionistas. À época, a religião tornou-se entre os imigrantes um fator de unificação cultural, sendo el prete (o padre) um líder religioso, político e social. Os imigrantes, em sua maioria agricultores/as, reconstruíram no Rio Grande do Sul características de sua ancestralidade e tornaram suas memórias novos projetos de vida. Este livro reúne algumas das primeiras famílias das colônias de imigrantes italianos no Rio Grande do Sul, bem como apresenta mapas do processo de povoamento e traços daquele momento ainda preservados na arquitetura de seus casarões e de suas Igrejas.
