Excerpt from Familiar Garden Flowers Malope, from malos, soft, in allusion to the texture of the leaves and the emollient properties of the plants. N.o., llnlracm. Linnean: 16, lionadclp/i 8, - The mallows are endogenous plants. Com prising herbs, shrubs, and trees, with simple leaves which are usually lobed, and with showy owers which, with very few exceptions, have five sepals and five petals. The recognition of mallow worts by the beginner in botany is extremely easy, as the family likeness is preserved all through in a con spicuous way. The manner in which the owers are spirally twisted before they expand is peculiar, and the union of the filaments of the stamens into a tube which sheathes the style is equally peculiar and characteristic. The ovary consists of numerous carpels arranged in a whorl around a central axis; they are one-celled the seeds are somewhat three-sided, and are sometimes covered with a cottony down. In this family we find the mallow, the hibiscus, the hollyhock, the cotton plant, the side, and the abutilon, all more or less familiar owers. The silk cotton tree (bumbam) is closelv related to the mallows, although properly placed in a separate order. It is from its seed-vessels that the soft fibre is derived, precisely as in the common cotton which is strictly malvaceous. P, 33. Excerpt from Familiar Flowers of Field and Garden: Described and Illustrated To any' artist who is a colorist it is almost incon ceivable that crimson should not be distinguished from scarlet. When it is possible for him to produce fifty distinct variations of red between these two colors, it will be easily understood why he should look on the color-blind person as an eighth wonder of the world! Excerpt from Familiar Garden Flowers Light words are at times more serviceable than learned lines, and persuasions are often more effective than arguments. This is especially the case in respect of subjects that are adapted for universal enjoyment, and that appeal to feeling first and afterwards arouse curiosity and set the mind to work. Garden flowers give more delight, perhaps, to those who study their history and cultivation and uses, than to such as admire them but in a casual way, and who may be said to smile and pass on. But in either case the gratification, which is one of sentiment in the first instance, becomes an intellectual exercise, and may be aided by one given to gossiping, and with a little knowledge to flavour his words. It is with some such purpose the following papers have been penned to accompany a series of picture adapted to awaken and sustain an interest in "familiar garden flowers." Excerpt from Garden Flowers Mountain Lady's Mantle is an inconspicuous plant of European Origin often utilized in corners of rock gardens and perennial borders. The Lady for whom the plant was named must have been a dwarf, for her mantle grows no more than six inches in height. The digitate leaves have a silky and hairy under surface; the modest, quite drooping flowers should appear in late April and May. You may start this little plant from seed in either sun or shade, and it can easily be increased by division. Excerpt from The American Flower Garden What is a garden?' It is man's report of earth at her best. It is earth emancipated from the commonplace. It is man's love of loveliness carried to excess man's craving for the ideal grown to a fine lunacy. It is piquant won derment; culminated beauty that, for all its combination of telling and select items, can still contrive to look natural, debonair, native to its place.
