Anhand einer deutsch - englischen Familientragödie werden die Kriegsfolgen des 20. Jahrhunderts aufgegriffen. Die Botschaft des Werkes zeigt den Machtkampf der unterschiedlichen Regime und deren Unversöhnlichkeit, darunter die Aggression des Hitlerregimes gegen die Rüstungsindustrie, die 1940 in Coventry auf Hochtouren arbeitete. In einem deutschen Blitzangriff wurden die Stadt Coventry und die Kathedrale zerstört. Am 13.Februar 1945 zerstörten britische und amerikanische Bomber nur in 20 Minuten die historische Innenstadt von Dresden. Angeblich waren diese Angriffe den Russen, die bereits vor den Toren von Dresden standen, in Jalta versprochen worden, wofür die Beweise bis heute fehlen. Churchill gab später zu, mit der völligen Zerstörung der Stadt, den Russen die Kampfkraft der westlichen Alliierten dokumentiert zu haben. Strategisch war der Angriff sinnlos, alle Eisenbahnbrücken blieben unzerstört. Dafür starben im Bombenhagel unschuldige Bürger der Stadt, Tausende von Flüchtlingen und unschätzbare Kulturgüter. Die Kathedrale von Coventry wurde mit deutscher Hilfe „Aktion Sühnezeichen“ von 1956 , nur innerhalb von 16 Jahren wieder aufgebaut und gehört zu den legendären Stätten der Menschheit. Hingegen der Aufbau der Dresdner Frauenkirche erfolgte erst nach dem Fall der Mauer. Mit dem Aufsetzen des Turmes im Jahr 2004 gehörte das Elbtal um Dresden zum Weltkulturerbe, das die Stadt durch den Bau der Waldschlösschenbrücke 2009 wieder verlor.

The years c. 1250 to 1150 BC in Greece and the Aegean are often characterised as a time of crisis and collapse. A critical period in the long history of the region and its people and culture, they witnessed the end of the Mycenaean kingdoms, with their palaces and Linear B records, and, through the Postpalatial period, the transition into the Early Iron Age. But, on closer examination, it has become increasingly clear that the period as a whole, across the region, defies simple characterisation – there was success and splendour, resilience and continuity, and novelty and innovation, actively driven by the people of these lands through this transformative century. The story of the Aegean at this time has frequently been incorporated into narratives focused on the wider eastern Mediterranean, and most infamously the ‘Sea Peoples’ of the Egyptian texts. In twenty-five chapters written by 25 specialists, Collapse and Transformation instead offers a tight focus on the Aegean itself, providing an up-to date picture of the archaeology ‘before’ and ‘after’ ‘the collapse’ of c. 1200 BC. It will be essential reading for students and scholars of the Aegean and eastern Mediterranean regions, as well as providing data and a range of interpretations to those studying collapse and resilience more widely and engaging in comparative studies. Introductory chapters discuss notions of collapse, and provide overviews of the Minoan and Mycenaean collapses. These are followed by twelve chapters, which review the evidence from the major regions of the Aegean, including the Argolid, Messenia, and Boeotia, Crete, and the Aegean islands. Six chapters then address key themes: the economy, funerary practices, the Mycenaean pottery of the mainland and the wider Aegean and eastern Mediterranean region, religion, and the extent to which later Greek myth can be drawn upon as evidence or taken to reflect any historical reality. The final four chapters provide a wider context for the Aegean story, surveying the eastern Mediterranean, including Cyprus and the Levant, and the themes of subsistence and warfare.

Drug overdose, driven largely by overdose related to the use of opioids, is now the leading cause of unintentional injury death in the United States. The ongoing opioid crisis lies at the intersection of two public health challenges: reducing the burden of suffering from pain and containing the rising toll of the harms that can arise from the use of opioid medications. Chronic pain and opioid use disorder both represent complex human conditions affecting millions of Americans and causing untold disability and loss of function. In the context of the growing opioid problem, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) launched an Opioids Action Plan in early 2016. As part of this plan, the FDA asked the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine to convene a committee to update the state of the science on pain research, care, and education and to identify actions the FDA and others can take to respond to the opioid epidemic, with a particular focus on informing FDA's development of a formal method for incorporating individual and societal considerations into its risk-benefit framework for opioid approval and monitoring.

An important look at the hopeful rise and tragic defeat of the Egyptian Revolution of 2011 The Egyptian Revolution of 2011 began with immense hope, but was defeated in two and a half years, ushering in the most brutal and corrupt regime in modern Egyptian history. How was the passage from utmost euphoria into abject despair experienced, not only by those committed to revolutionary change, but also by people indifferent or even hostile to the revolution? In Martyrs and Tricksters, anthropologist and Cairo resident Walter Armbrust explores the revolution through the lens of liminality—initially a communal fellowship, where everything seemed possible, transformed into a devastating limbo with no exit. To make sense of events, Armbrust looks at the martyrs, trickster media personalities, public spaces, contested narratives, historical allusions, and factional struggles during this chaotic time. Armbrust shows that while martyrs became the primary symbols of mobilization, no one took seriously enough the emergence of political tricksters. Tricksters appeared in media—not the vaunted social media of a “Facebook revolution” but television—and they paved the way for the rise of Abd al-Fattah al-Sisi. In the end Egypt became a global political vanguard, but not in the way the revolutionaries intended. What initially appeared as the gateway to an age of revolution has transformed the world over into the age of the trickster. Delving into how Egyptians moved from unprecedented exhilaration to confusion and massacre, Martyrs and Tricksters is a powerful cultural biography of a tragic revolution.
