The majority of studies on the quality of life have been conducted in Western contexts and are based on Western participants. This book presents recent findings about the consequences and policy implications of economic stress for human capital development and family well-being in Asia. The scope of the chapters goes beyond the impact of current financial crisis to include the effect of economic deprivation families in Asia experience as a result of job loss, low-wage employment, and catastrophic natural calamities. This report is based on a study which examined the effectiveness of Home-Start support in terms of outcomes and costs to children and their families experiencing stress. Drawing on a range of research methods, including interviews with parents in receipt of Home-Start support, the report highlights the difficulties families referred to Home-Start experience and their perceptions of the support they receive, and the impact of support from Home-Start. Young families under stress is based on one of the first studies to apply economic analysis to a family support intervention in the UK. The study is also unique in that it is comparative, looking at the experiences of and outcomes for families receiving Home-Start and similar families that are not. The report makes recommendations for future Home-Start delivery, suggesting which families might benefit most from such support, and is relevant to similar services that provide support to families with young children.
