This book explores perceptions of toleration and self-identity through an analysis of otherness’ real experience of Italian travellers, Catholic missionaries and Maltese proto-journalists within Mediterranean border-spaces. Employing a multidisciplinary approach, which integrates the analysis of original and unpublished archival documentation with early modern European travel literature, the book shows how fluid subjects and border groups adapted to new environments, often generating information that made the Ottomans and their system of values real and dignified to an Italian audience. The interdisciplinary combining of historical methodology with the tools of comparative literature, anthropology and folklore studies provides a fresh perspective on concepts of tolerance as experienced in the early modern Mediterranean.

A collection of 15 articles from the March 2021 edition of La Civiltà Cattolica, the highly respected and oldest Catholic journal published from Rome. The March issue of English Civilta Cattolica is published as the world watches numerous COVID-19 vaccination campaigns being rolled out and there is naturally some concern about the different vaccines. Vaccines: Making responsible decisions by Carlo Casalone starts with a brief history of vaccination and then explains the strategic importance of vaccination in containing the coronavirus. Drew Christiansen continues his series on American politics with an examination of events from the storming of the Capitol on January 6th to the inauguration and the candidates for Biden’s cabinet. In the lead up to the pope’s visit to Iraq we published online three articles by our Middle East correspondent, Fr Giovanni Sale, on Christianity in the Middle East and Iraqi politics. Andreas Battlog followed up his recent profile of Karl Rahner with another on Johann Baptist Metz Auschwitz, the Contingent Trauma. And we also look at the role of religions in delivering the UN’s Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development.

To a large extent the present volume deals with merchants established on Ottoman territory for a long time. Whether they were subjects of the sultans or not will be considered of secondary importance; but many if not most of them probably fell into that category. 'Hard to pin down' traders also occur; in particular we have included a number of studies discussing people who started their lives as Ottoman subjects but whose business activities took them to Venice or the Habsburg territories, where some of them struck roots. Such situations after all form part of the life stories of merchants anywhere; and given the broad expanses of sea and land that many Mediterranean traders traversed, it makes sense to adopt as broad a perspective as possible.

The Ottoman City Between East And West written by Edhem Eldem and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1999-11-11 with History categories.

Studies of early-modern Islamic cities have stressed the atypical or the idiosyncratic. This bias derives largely from orientalist presumptions that they were in some way substandard or deviant. The first purpose of this volume is to normalize Ottoman cities, to demonstrate how, on the one hand, they resembled cities generally and how, on the other, their specific histories individualized them. The second purpose is to challenge the previous literature and to negotiate an agenda for future study. By considering the narrative histories of Aleppo, Izmir and Istanbul, the book offers a departure from the piecemeal methods of previous studies, emphasizing their importance during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, and highlighting their essentially Ottoman character. While the essays provide an overall view, each can be approached separately. Their exploration of the sources and the agendas of those who have conditioned scholarly understanding of these cities will make them essential student reading.
