Family and Medicine: Memories and Reflections is a journey that starts in the small town of Crystal Falls, Michigan, where the author learned the values of humble living and a hard work ethic. Stories of growing up in the Upper Pennisula of Michigan include those of his family, the people and the community, influences, that serve as a significant foundation to this day. At the University of Michigan, Jack met his wife, Nonnie, and the two of them became beloved Wolverine fans through good times and bad. This time was special as their relationship grew and the realities of World War II played a role in the decisions made. The book next takes the reader on a journey to Philadelphia where the author studied medicine at the Hahnemann Medical College and Hospital. This memoire provides an interesting look at the way things were in medical school in the mid 1940's. Augustana Hospital in Chicago was the site for his residency in family medicine and surgery. The stories abound of medicine, faith and family as he settled in Maquoketa, Iowa with his wife and eight children. Reflections of his life as an officer in the army, medical examiner and small town doc reveal a passion for medicine, the human story and a deep faith.

An initiative of the Indiana Academy of Family Physicians and the Indiana Academy of Family Physicians Foundation, Family Practice Stories is a collection of tales told by, and about, Hoosier family doctors practicing in the middle of the twentieth century. The stories celebrate that time in America considered to be the golden age of generalism in medicine---a time that conjures up Norman Rockwell’s familiar archetypal images of the country family doctor and a time when the art of healing was at its zenith.

In And Another Thing: Memories of Family Life with a Psychiatrist, Elizabeth Fenwick, wife and co-author of neuropsychologist Peter Fenwick, presents a collection of reflections on family life in London in the twentieth century. Originally written as a series of essays for "World Medicine", a leisure magazine for doctors which, under its editor Michael O'Donnell, "World Medicine" established itself as the most entertaining - and in terms of medical politics - the most irreverent and radical medical magazine of the 1970s. Elizabeth suggests it's a memoire, "a sort of potted autobiography without the boring bits". And boring it is not. It is both witty and perceptive; qualities that come out of close but affectionate observation of the small details and big anomalies of human life in all its forms.

Since the end of World War II, Nazi medical atrocities have been a topic of ambivalent reactions and debates, both in Germany and internationally: An early period of silence was followed by attempts of victims and representatives of medical organisations to describe what happened. Varying narratives developed, some of which had a stabilizing function for the identity of the profession, whereas others had a critical and de-stabilizing function. In today's international debates in the field of medical ethics, there are frequent references to Nazi medical atrocities, in particular in the context of discussions about research on human subjects, and on euthanasia. The volume analyses the narratives on Nazi medical atrocities, their historicity in different stages of post-war medicine, as well as in the international discourse on biomedical ethics.

The book Orphanage on Reflection is a story about two boys who were left without any family after a devastating fire took both of their parents and their home. The boys, Francis and Leo, are now under the care of a staff in the orphanage, which is a whole new experience for them. Both of the boys are very adventuresome and are always pushing the envelope in their activities. Some episodes are life-threatening and others as noted for their mischief. All of which is being recorded by Margie, the resident nurse. All the events described in this book are the authors real-life incidents, but not always with the same people. Only the names and locations have been changed to protect the subjects in this book. As you read along with each episode of their adventures, you can almost visualize, one, the potential dangers of some of them and, two, the events that report the misadventure of the two boys in their teens and are left loose to explore life in the real world. As you read this book about their experiences, it makes you wonder how they can get into so much mischief. Believe me, it was easy.
