This is the latest in a series of annual reports based on the Expenditure and Food Survey, which asks all household members in the survey above the age of seven to keep a diary of all food expenditure. The report shows trends, over four years, in purchases by type of food and also converts these purchases to show energy and nutrient intakes. Total expenditure on food and drink has fallen in real terms by 3.8 per cent since 2004-05 (though there was a rise of 8.2 per cent in actual prices). In 2007 an average of £24.95 per person per week was spent on food and drink for the household and £11.37 per person per week was spent on food and drink not brought into the home. As well as the overall trends the report also contains tables of geographic and demographic analysis, and examines trends relating to government policies.

I have taken quite a while to get this cookbook out. I started it, along with another one, while we were living in Florida. That was in 2007. I wanted to write this book to continue sharing my recipes and photos of the food I make with you and hope that you will enjoy the food when you try it.

An award-winning cookbook celebrating the author’s Indian heritage with simple, healthy recipes for all occasions—in a beautifully illustrated new edition. Winner of the Jeremy Round Award for Best First Book and shortlisted for Best Book at the Glenfiddich Awards, this fully revised and redesigned edition of Cooking with Mummyji features newly commissioned photography and more than 100 scintillating, simple, healthy recipes that celebrate Vicky Bhogal’s Indian roots. These exciting recipes come from Bhogal’s own family and friends: traditional Indian cooking using accessible ingredients. As Vicky says, “Our home food is much simpler than the food you find in Indian restaurants. We use very few spices. The same ingredients are generally used for everything but, like musical notes, can be combined in many different ways to create beautiful melodies.” A treasure of culinary delights, this is “an enchanting book, suffused with charm, wit and the kind of fresh, light recipes that can dazzle a dinner party or make a perfect supper for one” (Red Magazine). “Written with openness and delight in its subject . . . intelligent and fascinating.” —The Guardian “A tribute to the Sikh community living in Britain, Vicky Bhogal’s book brings favourite family dishes to the table in much the same way as they would be in rural Punjab.” —Time Out London

This is the latest in a series of annual reports based on the Expenditure and Food Survey, which asks all household members above the age of seven to keep a diary of all food expenditure. The report shows trends in purchases by type of food and also converts these purchases to show energy and nutrient intakes. The increase in expenditure on food in 2005-6 was below the rate of inflation. However the most remarkable change was a substantial increase in both the purchase of fruit and vegetables and large drop in the purchase of confectionery. In spite of this there is a small increase in the energy intake per person and the intake of fats and saturated fatty acids remain well above recommended limits. As well as the overall trends the report also contains tables of geographic and demographic analysis.

Every family’s essential cookbook and invaluable reference for eating tasty, healthy meals based on the new Canada’s Food Guide. Fast food and packaged meals have become a way of life for many busy families. While these foods may seem convenient, they come at a price: childhood obesity and type II diabetes are on the rise, while children are being deprived of the benefits of real food. Now, from the co-author of The Baby’s Table and a respected pediatrician comes a user-friendly book for the whole family. This book covers the finicky toddler to the ravenous teen and all the stages in between. Here are 150 easy and appealing recipes that everyone will enjoy, featuring great ideas for healthy school lunches, snacks and family meals. What’s more, it’s the only book based on the new Canada’s Food Guide, published in 2007. The Good Food Book for Families will help Canadians understand and use the guide to its fullest. Also included are sidebars addressing topics including food allergies, the best foods for brain development, vegetarian diets, omega-3 fatty acids, and what to do when your teen wants to go on a diet. In a world where supersized portions and highly processed foods have become the norm, there’s no better time for this book.
