Family Group Conferences are seen as a progressive and influential form of practice in child welfare across the globe. This book examines and identifies variations in independent advocacy provision offered to young people and their families in relation to undertaking a FGC, and discusses how these can impact the outcomes both positively and negatively for young people involved. Using critical discourse analysis and an original theoretical framework, the outcomes of advocacy provision are examined from participants’ perspectives prior to, during, and after the FGC process has been completed. The analysis develops themes that are discussed comprehensively and recommendations are made for the enhancement of advocacy provision generally, and, for young people involved in FGC specifically.

In 1989, New Zealand formalized the social work trend toward involving the family in child protection decision-making processes. Central to this legislation is the Family Group Conference, based on indigenous Maori decision-making practices. Connolly (social work, U. of Canterbury, New Zealand) and McKenzie (community and family studies, U. of Otago, New Zealand) discuss the social construction of family decision-making, the country's experience with this empowering model, international adaptations, and the necessity of a sound theoretical basis--which they provide in their Effective Participatory Practice model exemplified in two case studies. This book is a professional text focusing on the role and practice of Family Group Conferencing in human services. It provides a detailed understanding of Family Group Conferences to a wide audience of readers, including agencies, caseworkers, professionals and, importantly, facilitators of Family Group Conferences. The author will argue that when working with children, young people and their families, a practice environment must be created that shifts from assessment and investigation to one that encourages a culture of genuine engagement and helping. The book rests on the premises that families are capable of finding solutions that incorporate safety, and that the cornerstone of wellbeing is having a sense of family and belonging. The flexible framework of FGC and its limitless adaptability tor cultural and unique definitions of family will be emphasised. The origin, theoretical underpinnings and current research in Family Group Conferencing is highlighted, as is the importance of model fidelity. Scenarios and case studies are used to identify strengths, gaps and needs with a view to improving policy, practice, training, supervision and services where children, your people and families are at the centre.

In recent years there has been a developing trend toward involving family in the processes of child protection decision making. In 1989, New Zealand introduced new children and young persons legislation that formalized this trend in the child care and protection area. central to the operation of this legislation is the Family Group Conference. The model, based on traditional indigenous decision-making practices, has revolutionized social work with children and families and provides the opportunity for family, including extended family, to actively participate in matters concerning children and young persons. While family group conferences have been developed in New Zealand, the principles of family decision making in child protection work are of wide current interest and are increasingly utilized in practice developments internationally. experience indicates, however, that developing innovative policy and legislating for intervention processes is only part of what is required for good practice. Practice inevitably needs to be strongly located within a sound theoretical framework. The purpose of this volume is to provide the first theoretical and practice analysis of using family gr The book explores the central requirements of professional practice in the achievements of positive outcomes for children and families and offers a conceptual framework designed to provide multiple pathways for achieving participatory practice. A distinguishing feature of the book is that it develops a model of family decision making, effective participatory practice (EPP), that critically considers the family group conference process and the linking of models of empowerment, family participation, and partnerships in child protection.
