Adopt a more effective approach to temporary and long-term residential care! Presenting the voices of staff, parents, and residents, Family-Centered Services in Residential Treatment: New Approaches for Group Care examines the changes and challenges of residential care from the old-fashioned orphanage to the modern group-care home. These thoughtful essays offer suggestions and methods to provide more effective services in temporary and long-term settings. Containing case studies, personal experiences, and professional insights about the potentials and limitations of residential care, this reliable resource will help you develop improved services for youths and their families. Family-Centered Services in Residential Treatment presents fresh evaluations of new and old techniques as well as ideas for meeting individual needs. By building connections among parents, youths, and staff, you can develop more successful treatment programs and encourage stronger family ties even when children are best served by long-term residential care. Family-Centered Services in Residential Treatment addresses the crucial questions of residential care, including: how can staff ease children's transitions into and out of residential care? what do parents of emotionally disturbed youth need from the staff and professionals in a residential care setting? what was right--and wrong--about the old-fashioned orphanage? Could such an institution work today? how does the transition to the teamwork approach affect staff members? when is residential care most beneficial to children? what kind of care is appropriate for AIDS orphans? Family-Centered Services in Residential Treatment will help psychologists, therapists, and social workers unite theory and practice to create a family-oriented environment for troubled clients.

Documented evidence suggests that community safety is best achieved through policies promoting human services rather than relying totally on prisons and that promoting intervention in an individual's own environment (known as 'ecological integrity') is closely associated with effective intervention. This is the first book to focus on the transfer of knowledge of worldwide effective offender rehabilitation programs. Prominent researchers and practitioners in the criminal justice field have contributed their extensive knowledge of what it takes to implement effective correctional practices with ecological integrity. * Reviews "real world" challenges of program effectiveness and survival * Offers effective, evidence based, innovative alternatives to imprisonment of offenders * Offers a common multi-level systems perspective as a framework for the international case studies featured * The first book to focus on the transfer of knowledge and best practice through the concept of "technology transfer"

This volume is the product of a combined effort to find programs of service delivery that demonstrably treat the varieties of mental health problems of children and their families. The Section on Clinical Child Psychology (APA, Clinical Psychology Section I) and the Division of Child, Youth, and Family Services (APA, Division 37) established a task force whose mission was to identify, provide recognition for, and disseminate information on such programs. Their findings are presented here. The opening chapter and each section overview chapter provide orientations to the program descriptions and examine characteristics of exemplary interventions. The targeted problems include: child abuse and neglect, school adjustment problems, social problem-solving problems, autism and developmental disabilities, conduct disorders and severe emotional problems, children affected by disasters and trauma, children whose parents are divorced, children of teenage parents, family dysfunction and parent-child relationships, oppositional defiant disorder, and attention deficit disorder. Settings for interventions in the model programs include: schools, mental health centers and family guidance clinics, hospitals and pediatric practices, group homes and sheltered workshops, community centers, family homes, summer camps, and coordinated systems of care. The 18 programs described demonstrate the rationale for their interventions, their targeted populations, the type of staff and personnel, various programmatic interventions, aspects of the problems, implementation of interventions, and how the programs have been evaluated. The needs for improved mental health services remain strong. The supporting organizations and the members of the Task Force intend for the product of this project to be helpful in providing models for meeting those needs.

In the U.S., when a patient is in need of rigorous psychiatric care, the first step is hospitalization. However, elsewhere in the world, psychiatric home treatment is proposed as an alternative. Model programs in Canada and the United Kingdom are publicly administered by community health agencies or teaching hospitals. Home Treatment for Acute Mental Disorders provides a review of the literature on home care and describes working programs around the world. This timely volume reviews treatment plans for different disorders with case illustrations, explains the administration of a PHC program and offers guidelines to case workers. It will be of interest to psychiatrists and policy makers working on the issue of patient hospitalization.
