The book interrogates the experience of being young and becoming adult in rural Bangladesh, in a context of profound processes of socio economic change. Throughout South Asia, new educational opportunities and an increase in the age at which girls and boys get married are opening new spaces for young people to live the passage to adulthood. This book documents and describes the everyday reality of this changing gendered transition for young people in a rural area of South West Bangladesh. If focuses on three main areas that are central to young people’s experience: those of college and student life, friendships and relationships with those of the same sex and across sexes and marriage and the issues involved in the choice of a marriage partner. Family structure consists of family size and composition, family status and role, family power and authority, family communication and interaction and family relationship. These patterns of family structure are quite universal, and vary across the world cultures. Over the decades the empirical studies on the patterns of family structure have done are mostly culture-specific or specific content or perspective-oriented. This empirical book cross-culturally focuses on comprehensive multidimensional patterns of family structure between Muslim and Santal communities in rural Bangladesh. In so doing primary data collected through structural questionnaire method from both the communities, Kalna village, Bangladesh suggest that there are significant cross-cultural differences in family structure: family size and composition, family status and role, family power and authority, family communication and interaction, marital and family relationship. The findings would help behavioral and social scientists to understand cross-cultural family structure. The results would also help policy-makers and practitioners to design cross-cultural family welfare policy and programs.

The study attempts to explain changes in reproductive behaviour of rural women of Bangladesh that has occurred at a time when the country was predominantly poor and agricultural. Three different areas were studied, using time series analysis, and changes measured by demand for additional children and current contraceptive use. The findings show that demand for no additional children was generated prior to the fertility decline and that the family planning programme helped to mitigate the demand for fertility control modifying supply logistics since the late 1970s. Reproductive behaviour of women is strongly affected by biosocial and cultural factors related to patriarchal social structure. Desired family size in all three areas were similar prior to the fertility decline of the 1980s. It was lower than the fertility rate and is probably affected by prior improved survivorship. During the period studied, desired family size reduced equally in all three areas. With this same level of desired family size, an efficient Matlab Family planning programme successfully reduced fertility from the mid 1970s, while high fertility in the other two areas began to decline from the 1980s.

Women And Climate Change In Bangladesh written by Margaret Alston and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-02-11 with Social Science categories.

Bangladesh is by no means a high emitter of carbon, but it is nevertheless one of the countries most critically affected. There is a significant risk of damage to lives and livelihoods due to climate change in the form of cyclones, flooding and storm surges, and slow-onset impacts such as droughts, sea level rises and river basin erosion. Moreover, Bangladeshis are especially vulnerable as a high proportion of people live in extreme poverty. This book assesses the impact of climate change in Bangladesh, and presents the findings of a three-year, in-depth study undertaken at village level in different districts of the country. It examines national policies, contrasting them with what is actually happening at village level. It outlines the impact of climate change on livelihood strategies and health, and focuses particularly on the impact on gender relations, showing that although women have a significant role to play in helping communities cope with the effects of climate change, cultural customs and practices often work against this. The book argues for, and puts forward policy proposals for, recognising women’s active contribution and supporting gender equality as a critical strategy in global adaptation to climate challenges.
