Excerpt from Famous American Authors The limits of this book make it impossible to use sketches of several authors of whom I had intended to write. A sketch of John G. Whittier appears in my book, "How Success is Won"; Bayard Taylor, in "Poor Boys Who Became Famous"; Harriet Beecher Stowe, Helen Hunt Jackson, and Louisa M. Alcott, in "Girls Who Became Famous." I desired to include Mary Mapes Dodge, Elizabeth Stuart Phelps, Rose Terry Cooke, and some other women, whose work I greatly admire, but these must be left for the future. Of course the names of many gifted authors will suggest themselves to each reader, but only a few could be selected for this volume, from the many who have given honor to America by their genius. I gratefully acknowledge the courtesy of the authors herein represented, and also that of their publishers, in granting permission to make extracts from their books. Excerpt from Stories by American Authors "And I - what I seem to my friend, you see - What I soon shall seem to his love, you guess. What I seem to myself, do you ask of me? No hero, I confess." A Light Woman. - Browning's Men and Women April 4, 1857. - I have changed my sky without changing my mind. I resume these old notes in a new world. I hardly know of what use they are; but it's easier to stick to the habit than to drop it. I have been at home now a week - at home, forsooth! And yet, after all, it is home. I am dejected, I am bored, I am blue. How can a man be more at home than that? Nevertheless, I am the citizen of a great country, and for that matter, of a great city. I walked to-day some ten miles or so along Broadway, and on the whole I don't blush for my native land. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from History of American Literature The wide use of the author's History of English Literature the favor with which it has been received in all parts of the United States, and the number of earnest requests for a History of American Literature on the same plan, have led to the writing of this book. It has not appeared sooner because the author has followed his rule of making a careful first-hand study, not only of all the matter discussed, but also of a far greater amount, which, although it must be omitted from a condensed textbook, is, nevertheless, necessary as a background for judgment and selection. The following chapters describe the greatest achievements in American literature from the earliest times until the present. Many pupils fail to obtain a clear idea of great American authors and literary movements because textbook writers and teachers ignore the element of truth in the old adage, "The half is greater than the whole," and dwell too much on minor authors and details, which could reasonably be expected to interest only a specialist. In the following pages especial attention has been paid, not only to the individual work of great authors, but also to literary movements, ideals, and animating principles, and to the relation of all these to English literature. The author has further aimed to make this work both interesting and suggestive. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Great American Writers Brown's career was a natural resultant of his temperament and of the times in which he lived. Born in Philadelphia on January 17, 1772, he was close to the American Revolu tion, and for most Of his short life he must have moved in an atmosphere conducive to radical thinking and public service. That his parents were of Quaker descent accounts for some Of the quiet of his home; but he was a delicate, thoughtful boy by nature. When his parents wished to walk out on an errand, it was enough to leave him with a book; and he was known to study the map on the wall with such interest as to forget the dinner hour. Excerpt from A Dictionary of American Authors Th! Present volume is an outgrowth of the writer's Handbook of American Authors, first published in 1884, several features which the judgment of the public approved in the earlier work having been retained in this. Without pretending to contain an exhaustive list of American writers, it may neverthe less lay claim to be fairly inclusive, as the more than six thousand names herein mentioned will serve to show. A few names that might naturally be looked for here have been omitted at the request of their owners; while some others have not been included, for the reason that diligent search failed to discover any trustworthy data concerning them. Here and there, too, the reader may chance upon unfilled dates of birth, or initials unexpauded. Yet in the ma iority of such cases application by letter made directly to the owners of the names aforesaid, or to relatives and immediate friends of such persons, has failed to elicit any response. All reasonable efiort has been made to obtain trustworthy information upon such points, but failure to obtain replies to let ters of inquiry must account for the greater number of such omissions and here it may not be out of place to mention that information of more general tharacter obtained from private sources has now and then been received too late to be of service, owing to the fact that the work was already electrotyped before it came to hand.
