Excerpt from Famous American Statesmen "With the great, one's thoughts and manners easily become great; ... what this country longs for is personalities, grand persons, to counteract its materialities," says Emerson. Such lives as are sketched in this book are a constant inspiration, both to young and old. They teach Garfield's oft-repeated maxim, that "the genius of success is still the genius of labor." They teach patriotism a - deeper love for and devotion to America. They teach that life, with some definite and noble purpose, is worth living. I have written of Abraham Lincoln, one of our greatest and best statesmen, in "Poor Boys Who Became Famous," which will explain its omission from this volume. Excerpt from Famous American Statesmen Orators, Past and Present, Vol. 6 of 6: With Biographical Sketches and Their Famous Orations God did not make the American people the mightiest human force Of all time simply to feed and die. He did not give our race the brain Of organization and heart of domination to no purpose and no end. No; he has given us a task equal to our talents. He has appointed for us a destiny equal to our endowments. He has made us the lords Of civilization that we may administer civilization. Such administration is needed in Cuba. Such administration is needed in the Philip pines. And Cuba and the Philippines are in our hands. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Famous American Statesmen Orators, Past and Present, Vol. 2 of 6: With Biographical Sketches and Their Famous Orations Hamilton's career is one of great interest to those who seek to study intelligently the beginnings of the nation. A man of great personal force and of strong aristocratic feeling, he represented the principle of authority, of government framed and adminis tered by the few for the benefit of the many. In a series of papers Hamilton had exposed the inherent defects of the existing Confederation, and it is now generally acknowledged that the first suggestion toward the establishment of an adequate Federal Government came from him. Although the particular plan proposed by Hamilton in the Federal Convention, which met at Philadelphia in 1787, was laid aside, yet it was the spirit of the system conceived by him which then and there prevailed, and has since been a controlling principle in the administration of the Federal Government. Guizot has said of him that there is not in the Constitution of the United States an element of order, of force, and of duration, which he did not powerfully contribute to inject into it and cause to predominate. While it was still uncertain whether the Constitution would be adopted by the several State conventions, Hamilton, in conjunction with James Madison and John Jay, wrote, as has been said, The Federalist, to recommend the proposed national organic law as the best obtainable under the circumstances. Excerpt from Famous American Statesmen Orators, Past and Present, Vol. 1: With Biographical Sketches and Their Famous Orations Oratory, said Abraham Lincoln, s the great power that moves nations to do and dare; it was oratory that wrecked Rome and made Christianity live. None of our public men better understand the power of oratory than did Lincoln, and he esti mated it from its highest plane. He would not have been a great orator in Rome when Roman people were swayed by the impassioned eloquence of their orators to deify to-day and crucify to-morrow, but he was one Of the greatest Of American orators of the rare type that always appeals to the considerate judgment Of mankind. The power Of the impassioned oratory that swayed the ancients in the days of Demosthenes has been impaired by the growing in culture and thoughtful ness Of the people Of all nations. There are occa sions when it is yet most appropriate and impressive, but they are rare. It at times asserts itself In great trials in our courts of justice, but its impressions speedily perish, unless they appeal to some enduring human sympathy. Senator Depew truthfully says, Eloquence is the master element in politics, but political oratory in this country, like the political oratory Of every other civilized country Of the world, has materially changed in its most effective attributes. In the days Of Thomas Corwin Of Ohio, and Sargent S. Prentiss of Mississippi, the political orator was the sole dependence of political parties. The news paper was then a luxury and did not reach the masses of the people. The hustlings was, therefore. Excerpt from Heroes and Statesmen of America: Being a Popular Book of American Biography, Embracing the Lives of the Representative Great Men of the Nation But this wonderful story of progress is not all that should engage our attention at this period of national rejoicing. It is fitting that we Should remember the great men of our history, to whose labors we owe all that we now enjoy, and that we should know the story of their lives and the means by which they accomplished the task allotted to them. America has no prouder record than that of the lives of her great men - none from which her children may draw greater in spiration, or learn more useful Iessons. Not one of them owed his success to fortune or social position, but all were eminently self-made men; and their lives are full of hope and encouragement to those who would emulate their glorious examples. The writer of these pages has thought the present a proper time to offer to his countrymen this collection of brief biographies of the great men whose deeds illustrate the First Century of American Independence. There never was a time when such a work was more needed; there never was a time when our people needed, as they do now, to be taught that enduring success in public life can be attained only by honesty, disinterested patriotism, and fitness for the task assumed, and that he only is the truest lover and best servant of his country who is willing to sink all considerations of self in his desire to promote the welfare of his fellow - citizens. Such was the Spirit that animated the men whose lives are recorded in these pages. They were often mistaken as to the means to be employed, or the course to be pursued, but never as to the end to be attained. They were will ing to spend life and fortune in the effort to benefit their country, and faithfully and patiently sought to qualify themselves for the great work to which they were called. They have their reward in the grateful love and honor with which their country cherishes their mem ory, and their lives are lessons which each American should take deeply to heart. Excerpt from Statesmen IN the preparation of this work the author's aim has been to present a series of character sketches of the eminent persons selected for por traiture. These selections of subjects have been made for the purpose of placing before the pres ent generation of Americans salient points in the careers, of public men, whose attainments in statesmanship were the result of their own indi vidual exertions and force of character rather than of fortunate circumstances. Therefore, these brief studies are not biographies. The au thor had the good fortune of personal acquaint ance with most of the statesmen of the latter part of the period illustrated by his pen; and he considers it an advantage to his readers that they may thus receive from him some of the impres sions which these conspicuous personages made upon the mental vision of those who heard and saw them while they were living examples of nobility of aim and success of achievement in American statesmanship. Excerpt from Famous English Statesmen of Queen Victoria's Reign The history of these men is largely the history of Great Britain during the last half of the nineteenth century. With Peel begins the relief of Ireland through Catholic Emancipation; with Gladstone, better land laws, and perchance self-government for Ireland. With Palmerston is told the story of the Crimean War; with John Bright, the struggle for free trade, and his noble defence of America in our Civil War; with Forster, the great gift to England of elementary education; with Shaftesbury, the elevation of labor through legislative enactments and the most generous sympathy; with Beaconsfield and with Fawcett, victory over obstacles almost insurmountable, the race question, and blindness. If, as Froude says, "those whom the world agrees to call great are those who have done or produced something of permanent value to humanity," then the statesmen sketched in this volume may well be called great. They loved and served their country, and have helped her to reach an exalted position among the nations. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
