"A new type of achitecture has emerged in the last decade : the iconic landmark building, which challenges the traditional architectural monument. In the past, public buildings expressed shared meaning through well-known conventions. Today those conventions are superceded by commercial forces and the quest for instant fame. Public architecture is now required to be an amazing piece of surreal sculpture as well as something that appeals to a diverse audience - at once provocative and practical yet without the context that religion and ideaology once provided. Such contrary demands drive the architect toward a new convention : the enigmatic signifier. This curious sign suggests many meanings without naming of them. The most publized version of the genre, Frank Gehry's New Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, 1997, became an instant media event that forces other architects to design event buildings routinely. This 'Bilbao effect' has led to a series of landmark buildings by architects such as Norman Foster, Peter Eisenman, Enric Miralles, Zaha Hadid, Daniel Libeskind, Renzo Piano, Will Alsop, and Rem Koolhaas. Some of these buildings are successful creations, while others make us wince." -- book jacket.

Excerpt from Famous Buildings: A Primer of Architecture The chief object of this little book is to stimulate youthful readers. It is believed that it will help to form correct judgment and taste and that its elementary presentation of the leading styles in Architecture, and their setting in time and place, will be welcomed by many who have hitherto sought in vain for just such information in compact form. Its brief summaries of principles, periods, and styles; its glossaries of terms and lists of proper names pronounced and explained and its classified lists of buildings in many cities, should make it useful as a reference book for the home and school. It brings together a body of knowledge on an important subject in readable form in a way not attempted before, and is suited to use as a reader, or as a handbook for classes, clubs or reading circles. The occasional intimate biographical matter is intended to interest in the same way as that contained in "Famous Pictures" by the same author, which has proved widely popular. Competent authorities have read and approved the manuscript. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Some Famous Buildings and Their Story: Being the Results of Recent Research in London and Elsewhere Not the least interesting branch of modern research is that which opens for us new chapters in the history of our own country and shows us the character and ambitions in the lives of our ancestors. The public have long been familiarised with the results of scientific inquiry into the organic structure and the habits of Nature, but the labours of the historian are too often hidden in treatises of too abstruse a form to attract the general reader. And even where an attempt has been made to present these subjects of human interest in a more palatable form we too often have to lament a looseness of expression and an indifference to historical accuracy which defeat every good purpose in vlew.
