I saggi qui raccolti, scritti da studiosi che a vario titolo possono considerarsi allievi di Paolo Pombeni, affrontano da diverse angolature il tema del “politico”. Si tratta di riflessioni che, partendo da una pluralità di ambiti, periodi e paesi – dalla questione della periodizzazione ai fascismi, dalla Gran Bretagna di fine Ottocento alla Francia di Pompidou e all’Italia repubblicana –, mostrano come, anche grazie al gruppo di lavoro che ha raccolto le suggestioni innovative introdotte da Pombeni a partire dagli anni ’80, si siano profondamente modificati il significato oltre che l’impostazione metodologica della storia politica nella storiografia italiana dell’ultimo quarantennio. Tale approccio, come emerge dalla lettura dei saggi, valorizza il dialogo fra la storia e le scienze sociali, privilegiando la comparazione e la dimensione transnazionale dei fenomeni storici. Pur distanti nei contenuti, i saggi offrono un interessante spaccato dei grandi problemi che hanno caratterizzato l’età contemporanea fino ai nostri giorni: la percezione delle cesure temporali, il ruolo della comunicazione nelle dinamiche della vita politica, il rapporto tra leader e masse, il grado di legittimazione delle istituzioni, la crisi del modello socio-economico e politico dell’Occidente.

In Transatlantic Fascism, Federico Finchelstein traces the intellectual and cultural connections between Argentine and Italian fascisms, showing how fascism circulates transnationally. From the early 1920s well into the Second World War, Mussolini tried to export Italian fascism to Argentina, the “most Italian” country outside of Italy. (Nearly half the country’s population was of Italian descent.) Drawing on extensive archival research on both sides of the Atlantic, Finchelstein examines Italy’s efforts to promote fascism in Argentina by distributing bribes, sending emissaries, and disseminating propaganda through film, radio, and print. He investigates how Argentina’s political culture was in turn transformed as Italian fascism was appropriated, reinterpreted, and resisted by the state and the mainstream press, as well as by the Left, the Right, and the radical Right. As Finchelstein explains, nacionalismo, the right-wing ideology that developed in Argentina, was not the wholesale imitation of Italian fascism that Mussolini wished it to be. Argentine nacionalistas conflated Catholicism and fascism, making the bold claim that their movement had a central place in God’s designs for their country. Finchelstein explores the fraught efforts of nationalistas to develop a “sacred” ideological doctrine and political program, and he scrutinizes their debates about Nazism, the Spanish Civil War, imperialism, anti-Semitism, and anticommunism. Transatlantic Fascism shows how right-wing groups constructed a distinctive Argentine fascism by appropriating some elements of the Italian model and rejecting others. It reveals the specifically local ways that a global ideology such as fascism crossed national borders.

Eminent Italian historian Giovanni Levi once notably remarked that “no one is a Marxist anymore,” pointing to a paradox in Italian cultural history. While what is called "Marxism" was supposedly hegemonic over Italian culture, and especially history writing, for decades in the postwar period, it then seems to have suddenly disappeared. This study questions such a vision of a monolithic and hegemonic Marxism. It starts from the most effective anecdote to all ideologising narratives—that is, research into the texts themselves. It sees the Marxist historiography of the post-1945 period as a "history in the making," in which references to Marxian theory were a fundamental factor driving historiographical innovation. This allows the book to bring to light a highly original experience in the development of historiography, based on the long Italian tradition of reflection on historical knowledge.
